Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

When I was testing (commercials) I had several vans blow brake pipes on the rollers. Berlingos and Caddys were the more common ones if I remember correctly

No it's an Almera N16 model. Very common.

What's wrong with them? The n15 was a humdinger. Cheap and incredibly reliable. The pulzar gti beat a lot of cars in its class hands down.

Yeah I had a look at the photo again afterwards and was thinking the brake lines were elsewhere on the civic.

The n16 almeras were a heap of sh1te to be fair.

The n15 were very reliable machines, mainly due to a very reliable engine being carried
    over from the previous sunny.

Though they were reliable, they weren't great to drive due to a poor beam suspension setup at the rear. They also weren't built to last. Rust is the biggest issue on them.

The pulsar gti-r was sunny based and had proper independent rear suspension.

The newer pulsar vzr got the same suspension as the almera and is far from best in class, although it has a very nice engine.

I object to the Almera driver has no interest in cars. I've got an N16 Almera and I am a bit of a petrolhead (there is also a Mk2 Escort in the garage with a "nice" engine rebuild job). The logic for getting an Almera was that they were much cheaper to buy second hand when two years old compared to the Golf/Focus.

As for being heaps of sh1te, mine has just past 250K still on original gearbox, clutch, timing chain, suspension components (shocks changed) etc. The only things to be changed were heater motor resistor packs (blew when pollen filter was fitted, cure - remove pollen filter) and one rear brake caliper. I've driven mine fairly hard in that it has done retro rallies (pressed into service when the Escort threw a hissy-fit), set out multiple night nav & endurance event routes and a course car for a Forest Rally gathering timing gear......

Yes the car isn't as crisp handling as the Focus but then again you generally are not flinging it about the roads. Yes the plastics are not as soft as the Golf but I don't want it to drop random bits of plastic.

At this point, as the car is worth so little (high mileage petrol, sure who would want it!) that I'm planning on keeping it until it dies. Also, I want to get to 300K before I have to do a clutch change......

Edit - also, the Almera has got great ground clearance, which is handy when tearing down forest tracks and/or bumpy back roads. The Golf & Focus are just too low for what I send cars through.

To all the above im just surprised that car enthusiasts could get excited over an almera, sure they are reliable, but so is an oul corrolla or carina ,just you see so many almeras driven by oul lads ,never washed never minded in any way .... you get the picture they just look bland and boring

Would you send am M5 down a forestry track?
Horses for courses and the majority of car owners arent interested in spending their time waxing their car or obsessing over small things.
Not getting at car enthusiasts at all but thats the way it is. Sure we'd all love nice cars but they come with baggage from what i see. That said, toyota gearboxes have gone to hell this past few years from what i hear!

Its frightening to see the condition of some cars that I'm sharing the road with. What's worse is that there are cars out there never see a garage or NCT.

I bought a car of a dealer years ago mazda 626 had to bring it back because it started to burn oil.

He lent me a Hyundai Accent 1.3 it was the most unpleasant car I had ever driven. It looked to be in good shape but it was under powered, handled bad and the ride was bad. I just couldn't find any redeeming feature.

Anyway engine was bad in Mazda so I got a Honda accord in place of the Mazda. pretty decent of a small 2nd hand car dealer.

You cant really compare Mazda 6 and accent , cant expect much power from 1.3 engine,.... at the moment i've got hynday accent 03 , 1.3 engine, and i cant say anything wrong about it. ok, cant compare really with other cars like merc, audi etc,... , but it does the work, simple enough to work on, nearly passed nct... just little faults, which could have any car... ride and handling fine .. probably your courtesy car was just in bad mechanical condition ...

... .. have some mixture of feelings, like golf mark 3 made in china ... . otherwise every single bit in car is working , descent enough power for 1.3 petrol engine (86 hp ) .

cant say anything wrong about them.

Fair enough its not a comparison to mazda 626 or honda accord but going from engine size astra golf corolla megane would be similar size engine and in fairness all far better in every respect.

They were a good bit cheaper to buy when new though to be fair. I don't think they are as bad as they are made out to be. They are reliable enough and they are pleasant enough to drive, well in a cheap and chearful sort of way. Quality is not up there with more established(at the time) brands but it isn't terrible either IMO.

It's also a more reliable car than a 1.4 golf and megane imo.

Not that uncommon once the pads go past a point they can jump out.

I, up until recently, was looking after warranty, returns and exchange calipers. Any calipers we received that had run on the discs were refused the surcharge. The reason the pads fall out easily is because the discs have worn way beyond the point that they should have been replaced. There's a minimum disc thickness for that reason among others.

    A fair explanation.

I never measured them as that van was only to do for a few weeks but there wasn't any great lip on them.

Failed on a few other things but passed on brake performance. The outer surface of the discs were not as bad (still bad enough) and the inner is not visible to the tester. Still though it is a good example of how fallible the NCT can be.
