Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Whenever I see a tyre like that im very tempted to stick a screwdriver in the sidewall so it'll have to be replaced.

Steering rack of a 2006 corolla
Nct and 50k on the clock

Not bad maintenance just bad design
The boot protecting the knuckle joint
Had no breather hole so trapped water just seeped into the rack

Putting a new clutch slave cylinder in my friends LR Discovery 1. Lying underneath wondering why there's a drain hole on the bottom of the gearbox... hmmm... that's the plug hole and the plug is missing. No gear oil. He didn't realise this and has been driving it for months. Would love to meet the moron who left that loose

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,045 ✭✭✭Cerco

If you don't know who left it off how do you know it has been driven for months without the plug?
Doubt any gearbox would withstand driving for months with no oil.

That is actually drain hole at the bottom of the flywheel housing. It enables excess oil to drain from the Discovery. The reason you can plug it is in case you go wading, to prevent water ingress.

aaah, that's making sense Paul. I had a pinky up there and there wasn't a drop of oil to be gotten! best not plug that one up so!

Already posted in another thread but here seems to be the proper home for it!
Not my car but I still think this is a good place to share this.

Had this car come in today because the brakes felt spongy....

That caliper was seized (shock!) :-P Pads were down to the metal on the other side too.

A lady, driving a 1998 Passat 1.8, stopped by our place today.
She asked us to check the power steering oil, as the steering felt heavy.
After opening the bonnet we have noticed two things straight away:
The fan belt has snapped and the coolant was boiling.

This is how the belt looked like:

Failed on a few other things but passed on brake performance. The outer surface of the discs were not as bad (still bad enough) and the inner is not visible to the tester. Still though it is a good example of how fallible the NCT can be.

Yesterday I had a customer whose Jaguar S-Type passed with only one wiper arm...

How come tyre did not deflate?

i'd say it's a dual tyre axle, like this:

    m-hdtjulytire-3-cr-park.jpg

with the second tyre taking the weight of the vehicle.

Came across this on a fiesta, someone obviously had a rattle in their anti roll bar bush and couldn't be bothered replacing it.

Would have been nearly easier just to change the bloody thing :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,720 ✭✭✭Hal1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,339 ✭✭✭brembo26

Car came in recently with new pads on the front. It failed brake imbalance test , brakes were perfect 1 side and very little happening the other side.
Reason: the calliper was twisted during the process, causing the kink in the flexible brake pipe and little or no fluid going to the calliper. Cant think of a better example of why the nct is important.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 361 ✭✭nct tester

Car came in with the front wheel arch rubbing the tyre(one side only), when it was put up on the lift, the spring was in ribbons and the shock was just hanging there. Driver never noticed anything wrong, the broken edges were badly rusted so it hadnt happened recently.

Maybe, maybe not. If anti-roll bar is worn over there, that's actually the only option to deal with that apart from buying a new anti-roll bar. And this can be expensive.

Anyway, tape on bar goes very quickly (as seen on picture) so it's better to wrap a bushing instead. :P

    Hyundai Trajet,
Nearside bottom balljoint failed, and collapsed on the road,
pulled the driveshaft out of the gear box.
Thankfully this badly maintained piece of rubbish has now been scrapped.
