Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ultremo R1s - how many miles?

    Hi,
I can't find any indication on the Schwalbe website as to how durable the Ultrmo R1s area i.e. approximately how many miles I should get from a pair?
I've done over 1,000miles but less than 1,500miles on them and have a big race coming up. They look fine, no nicks or cuts and have never punctured but I've read posts about them suddenly going out of shape (I mean suddenly after 1,000miles).
Should I change them? Could do with not incurring the cost of a new set but they are reduced on CRC at mo.
    Your tuppence worth please?

I did a couple of thousand on mine before I convinced myself that they were about to explode.

I put some more hardwearing tyres on and immediately crashed on a wet roundabout. :pac:

Hence the switch from Sram to Campag and Carbon to Alu:confused:

    Different bike, different crash. :pac:

I don't have any Campag. You must be confusing me with someone more stylish.

It depends on the road surface. My first set this year lasted around 1500 km. Started to notice some very large bulges and rips after that. The second pair lasted a week. Thanks to a very long and rough patch of gravel during a race. Ripped the tyre to bits. I like them, but I think the Continental Grand Prix 4000 are a more durable tyre.

Yes, great tyre but they fall apart if you do so much as say something nasty to them. Pretty much the Kerry Katona of tyres.

Ride em too much and they start to get unsightly bulges all over?

I put a pair of em my bike about May last year. Did a load of sportives, took the bike to France for a month, came back & did the Sean Kelly spin, plus whatever training I did. They were fantastic the whole time, maybe 2 punctures over that whole time. Great tires. I'm sticking with them again this year (a new pair of Ultrema's like :))

About 800km before the sidewalls starting cracking, fibre threads coming off them, and shredded to pieces.

Spins, I had a set of Ultremo R1's based on recomendations here. I found them soft, but didn't ride them long enough to form a solid opinion on wear. Mine had about 250km on them and in that time the rear punctured 4 times, the final time to be fair was a huge nail that went in one side and out the other. I wasn't a fan but other people are. I am an avowed Conti GP4000S fan, they have left me down a couple of times too but mostly they are tough as boots. I still have an Ultremo R1 in black somewhere in the house if you are looking for a spare.

I have used Ultremos three separate times.
Pros - easy tyre to get on and off.

Cons. 3 blowpout punctures in the first week. They are unsuitable for the roads that I regularly roll on.

I had one tube left, so it is on the trainer wheel for the turbo.

Will not use them on the road again.

    Thanks for the response boys.
Thing is I've already decided I really like them so wasn't looking to be per or dis-suaded. I was just wondering should I replace them with more than 1,00 miles done and a big race coming up. Based on the answers, don't think I'll take any chances, I'm gonna replace them.

@ Quigs Snr, thanks for the offer but there's two on the way to me in the post.

Thanks again everyone for yere tuppence worth.
