Will be relocating to Dublin from the country to work in Sandymount. Where would be a good area to live that would be close by that's affordable and relatively safe? Will be travelling to work by public transport. From what I gather, no18 bus that serves Sandymount is unreliable so DART route would be best? Thanks.

Ringsend and Grand Canal are both areas which are near Sandymount. The 18 really isn't a reliable service at all, the only other buses that serve Sandymount are the 2 and the 3, which you get from O'Connell Street. Unfortunately they're not too frequent either, so DART would probably be best.

Get a bike. You could easily cycle to Sandymount from Grand Canal, Ringsend or Ballsbridge. Or just get a place in Sandymount and walk.

The 2 and the 3 bus service are changing shortly so don't rely on them either. One is being removed and the other given a reduced but more efficient service (according to DB)
