Backing up Folders on an External Hard drive question

Say I have My Music folder on my Laptop and I back up it's contents on an External Hard drive. How do I copy the folder on my laptop to the folder on the external hard drive, so that I back up any new files ive added to the folder, without copying all the files again?

what os are you using ,i think 1st link is for windows vista.
theres many sync programs avaidable, google search windows sync program.
