Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

NTSC NES - Humming noise

    Hi all,

I bought an NTSC NES off ebay but it gives an awful HUMMING noise from the television speakers plus flickering on bright screens.

I've read reports tht the PSU may be the cause...

Since the NES takes in 9VAC 1 amp, can I try using a standard PAL power supply on this instead of USA PSU and stepdown converter?

    Cheers,
    80s

Not to familiar with the insides of a NES but in most cases where you have hum like you describe it would normally point to a faulty capacitor. I am guessing that seeing as you have 9v ac going in that the capacitor is internal, as you need to change you ac to dc. The capacitor should be smoothing out the ac but as it goes bad it lets a bit through giving you ac hum.
Have a look at some of the Randy Fromm videos on you tube to have an understanding of how psu's work

Just in case someone else ever has this problem - it was indeed the power supply

It's a NTSC USA NES but a standard UK/Ireland power supply works fine. This is the one I picked up - http://warnersretrocorner.com/store/products/psu-for-super-nintendo-nes-more-consoles-2-5-mm-jack/

Let me say the NES never looked so good. Perfect image, perfect sound, 60Hz, no borders on a 50" screen with Captain Skyhawk :D

You could always ask Retr0 his opinion.

    Oh, sorry, never mind....... ;)

It may be time for a 'Buy Retr0 a NES Fund' sticky, this just won't go away :D

We could get an ad made,
"for just €5 a month you can help Retr0, this poor retro games player has suffered in relative silence, his plight not owning a Nes and therefore rendering his name Retr0gamer a lie.
You can help, your €5 will be put to good use, buying him a Nes and the training needed to use it into the future, providing much needed retrogaming kudos both for himself and his family.
So, please donate what you can and help, thank you for listening"

Seen this recently, Retr0 is the new Burton. He really doesn't like 50Hz

So is the power supply ac or dc, from what you describe its dc and not the ac i thought.
