I have a that I took out from the library a while back, I totally forgot about returning it. Recently I checked my mailed and looks like I have been accumulating a hefty fine. I am in the US at the moment, the book is back home. how do I return the book. Could I get my mom to post them out the book?

The only thing I can think of is to call the library and ask them directly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,109 ✭✭✭Cavehill Red

Step 1: Get that book back to the library ASAP, be it with the help of another student, a relative or An Post.
This will stop the fine from accruing. Plus, other people might be waiting on it.

Step 2: Send the library a grovelling message that the book is returned, and ask them if you can you negotiate the level of the fine.

Step 3: Pay fine (or don't graduate.)

I think there's an upper limit on the fine that can be accrued. I don't know how high it is, but it's there.

If the fine gets higher than the cost of the book you can just report it as lost and they'll charge you the price of the book + €50

No there aint..i've seen fines of two thousand euros.

The difference is that if the fine is over 20 euro you wont be allowed to graduate.

I believe there are book deposition banks outside the library for after-hours returns. At least, I think that's what those things are. A family member/friend wouldn't be able to get into the library without a student card but they should be able to put the book in one of those things. Then you just pay the fine next time you're in the library I guess.

There's no way anyone would/could pay a fine that large. The Library are reasonable enough, they're willing to work out a fair price in situations like this.

OP, unless you've done it 3 times already, you could just renew the book for a week

Can't renew after more than a week overdue or €10 fines on your account.

We were told at the start of the year that you can't renew books when you have outstanding fines

Seriously, the amount of misinformation on here is unreal.

This is the reason we have library tours.

    Just to clarify:

If you borow a book on your cards its your responsibility..that means you'd be unwise to lend the book to somebody else, leave the country with it or hand it to somebody you vauguely know to return.

The fine is generated on YOUR card, nobody else's.

Secondly..in the case of One Week loand they may be renewed Online up to seven times..giving a total loan period of seven weeks.

In the case of One Month loans they may be renewed online only once then they must be brought to the library for renewal.

If any book goes overdue it cannot be renewed by any means and needs to be returned to the library to stop fines accumalating...if a book is overdue you will not be able to renew other books or use the automated stack service...likewise if you have outstanding fines of 10 euro or more.

You cannot renew books by email.

You cannot renew books by phone.

There is nowhere outside the libaray to return books.

If you actually lose a book ie no hope of ever finding it again you will be charged the replacement cost of teh book PLUS a 50 euro handling charge..in the case of academic textbooks the combined total can easily be 150 euro or more...beware!

In the case of people who are finished up and due to graduate andy fine above 20 euro will incur a further charge of 25 euro if its nop piad before the commencement date is issued.

If there are overdue books or outstanding fines at the time of graduation the reader will not be allowed to graduate so please ensure if graduating in absentia or if you're away for the summer that your library account is clear.

So if you have libarary material you must be aware of due dates and fines..replacing lost books is costly and time-consuming and having books much longer than the loan period is depriving other library users of the use of the material.

Also note that all fines and charges were suggested by and agreed with the Students Union.

i'm pretty sure that's bollox about not being able to graduate with library fines, i owe both NUI Galway and Edinburgh University significant amounts and still have 2 shiny degrees. i even got a letter from edinburgh uni saying i wouldn't be able to graduate without paying my fine, ignored it and all was fine.

Trinity isnt NUI Galway or Edinburgh University..if you owe more than 20 euros the Proctors Office will be notified and your name wont be put forward for commencement...trust me,its part of my job.

My bad, I always forget there are libraries aside from the Hamilton, and that those are the only libraries which exist.

Yes, you can. I have done so on multiple occasions during the year.

I too have done this many times; book goes overdue, and just renew it online to stop the fine from accruing. Also, I've renewed other books while that was the case.

You CANNOT renew a book online if it goes overdue..you have to return it to the counter to renew.

You can within the first week, if your fines are less than €10.

Our library accounts must be magical, so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,979 ✭✭✭Jammyc

Yeah, I've done that before too, just to stop fines accumulating untill I drop it back. The only times that I've not been able to renew online is when there was a hold on it or I get the message "Your account is currently in use by system, please try again later" which is really annoying, I'd say I've paid about 3 euro in fines because a book has gone overdue as a result of that message.

Yes you can. You can renew it up to 7 times even with a fine on your account. Then you have to bring it in.

I've done so quite a few times this year. :o

You can renew an overdue book, but only within the first week that it goes overdue. So if your book is due back on Monday, you have until the following Sunday at 10pm to renew it.

The Library system was tweaked to allow this a couple of months ag.
