Does he have it secured? might just be slow. tell him to change the password if he thinks someone else is using it.

And make sure its not WEP encryption, Use WPA2

Type in your router gateway address into the web browser, it's something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254. Go into network>local network>client list. You should be able to see all active clients.
