Working as a nurse on a holiday Visa

Hi all,

I've recently decided to do some travelling next year and Australia is definitely the top of my to see list! I am due to qualify as a nurse this November and hope to stay here and work until Christmas. I was hoping to go over on a holiday visa for at least 3 months to Australia in January/ February of next year and I am wondering would it be possible to work as a nurse during this time?
I am really clueless on the topic and this is the first time I have looked into the issue so I would be very grateful for any help and advice!

Unless it's a specific working-holiday visa, you absolutely can't work on a normal holiday visa.

Nurses are in fairly big demand in Australia at the moment so you shouldn't really have any big difficulty getting a proper visa.

However, if you don't do it properly you could find yourself being arrested and deported for working illegally in Australia so any chance of going their legitimately would be seriously damaged in the future.

No need to go to the embassy at all.

To work as a nurse in Oz you'd have to get an extra health test done - pretty quick, chest xrays etc, and possibly a garda check

You also need to register with AHPRA (http://www.ahpra.gov.au) if you want to work as a nurse in Australia. That can take time so plan ahead.

If you want to work as a nurse in Australia, you need to get your nursing qualifications recognised here. Officially it is just a formality. In reality, it can take a while. AHPRA are pretty slow. I've heard some horror stories of 3-6 months for the whole process, though that was when they changed from state board to the national board. Try to do as much as you can at home, and finish it when you get here.
