    Hello all,

Really happy to be posting this comp as I'm a big Riverdance fan myself (no, really!)

We have an opportunity for you to win tickets for a 4 person box & 4 programmes for the 6:30 pm show in Dublin's Gaeity Theatre on Sunday 10th of July, as well as a copy of the latest Riverdance DVD and CD.

To be in with a chance to win, just tell us what you can remember and where you were and what you were doing when Riverdance burst onto the scene during the interval of Eurovision 1994?

Riverdance is in the Gaeity from now until August 28th, so if Sunday doesn't suit you, you can get tickets at www.ticketmaster.ie.

    Ts & Cs
    1) This competition is open to everyone except employees of Distilled Media Group, The Gaiety Theatre, Ticketmaster or Gerry Lundberg PR
    2) One entry per person
    3) You must be available to travel to the show on Sunday 10th July - no alternative date will be offered
    4) A winner will be chosen at random on Thursday 7th of July and notified by PM
I remember the night riverdance was first performed very well i was getting married in june that year and my then finance (now my husband) who is a DJ was playing for a wedding in a lovely country house hotel the bar was very small and was packed i was trying to keep an eye on what was happening and had to look over peoples shoulders to get a view of the tv screen i remember the buzz and excitment as the interval act was performed and then for ireland to win the eurovision with rock and roll kids just added to the night i thought i would never get home to see it up close as i had set it up to record. My husband saw none of it of course and didn't know what was going on by the updates he was getting from me. A great night.

I was working in a Bar when it was on and the whole place went quiet and burst out with applause as soon as it finished. The buzz was amazing, everyone was proud of it.

I was 4, but somehow managed to get a copy of it on VCR to watch years later!

Since then I have met Bill Whelan, and now know a few of the Riverdance crew. It's a stunning show! :) Would love to see it again!

I was 22, living in Kildare with my parents and expecting my first baby, unplanned but very much wanted. I remember vividly being kicked as we watched, glued to the tv, totally amazed that Irish dancing could be moving and beautiful, my baby jumped and kicked along to the music, sadly 3 wks later I delivered my daughter prematurely and she died after 4 short hours, so as you can tell, Riverdance holds quite emotional memories for me.

I was lucky enough to be at the Dress Rehearsal for the Eurovision! Friend of mine worked in RTE and wangled me some tickets (Big Eurovision fan me!)

Anyway, had no idea what the interval act was going to be so we're sitting there enjoying the show when Gerry and Cynthia announced "Ladies and Gentlemen, Riverdance!" On came Anuna (who were super), then Jean Butler dances on and we're going hmmm, this is very good and THEN on comes Michael Flatley  We'd never seen anything like it! We were glued to our seats and you could hear the intake of breath from the audience! When all the troupe lined up to dance together it was magical. At the end there was just a ROAR from the audience and we all got to our feet for a standing ovation. The hairs were standing up on the back of my neck :o.

Watching it the next night on tv was just as fantastic though nothing compared to the Dress Rehearsal. I've watched it many times since on tv but have never been to a live show.

    Giz me tickets!

I was sitting at home watching it with my family. My sister's best friend from DIT was in it and had told us that something BIG would be happening in the interval so although I had little interest in staying home to watch it, as an 18 year old who only wanted to be out, I did - and it was worth it!!

The afternoon of the Eurovision I got a phone call from a friend who had been to the open dress rehearsals. She told us she'd never seen anything like the interval act.

I was half hoping for Abba to make an appearance on the 20th anniversary of their win, so I was a bit annoyed, but I had to admit when I saw the interval act it was worth seeing.

I still would have preferred Abba though (....ahah!).

I was staying in a mates house lying half asleep on the couch when it came on.

I jumped up to watch when it came on because Gerry Ryan had seen the dress rehearsal the day before and had told his listeners to look out for this as it was gonna be mind blowing - how right he was……...

I remember being in my parents' house and being fascinated with

    A) the rhythms (something unusual like seven or nine beats to the bar)

    B) Michael Flatley's fluid, sensual, dramatic, skillful dance. Here was a new genre of dancing I had never seen before and Superhoofer in action at his best.

    C) the power of the horizontal line contrasting with the vertical position of the dancers' arms.

    D) the fantastic foot rhythms

well, back in 1994 in China, when and where there was neither Internet nor foreign TV programmes, I had no way to watch Eurovision. And of course I didn't know what it was until a number of years later. I first heard of Riverdance in early 2000, and it soon became one of the most wildly known icon of Ireland that all of my family know of back in China. I got a copy of the Riverdance CD and DVD (a very old show in NYC) a few years ago and I was amazed by that. I watched Riverdance in Gaiety twice so far but still wants to go for it this year.

Do you know, my Dad just randomly told me tonight that he'd love to go see this!! We were actually reminiscing about the night it was on. I was about 12 and of course being a huuuuge eurovision fan I had been glued to the tv but tbh i always went for my hot orange and biccies during the interval. Anyway, all of a sudden I hear my Dad running down the corridor to the kitchen and he practically dragged us in to watch! My Dad HATES music, but for some reason the whole Riverdance thing got to him in a big way.

Apparently he kept bugging my Mum to go and see it she was never very interested. It was her 2nd anniversary last week, and tbh it'd be nice to cheer Dad up with tickets. (Man, that sounds like such a feckin' made up story, I promise it's not!)

At a bbq in a friends place - we all put the burgers down and started cheering when it ended. Spine Tingling when you hear the crowd erupt!

I first remember watching the Eurovision in 1992 when Linda Martin won with Why Me?. I was 10 and seeing Ireland win something on an international stage was mind-blowing.

Having won again in 1993 with Niamh Kavanagh and In Your Eyes, I was glued to the tv at home in Athlone with my parents for 1994 and was simply blown-away by the interval act. I remember that roar when the performance finished making the hairs on the back of my neck stand-up. This was the Ireland I had grown up in - strong, independent and capable of achieving anything. I hadn't really known the 80s, or tough-times. For me Ireland could be successful at whatever we turned our hand to, and Riverdance was the embodiment of this new found confidence.

I saw Riverdance in Mozyr (southern Belarus). I was there to do some charity work to arrange for local kids affected by the Chernobyl fallout to come to Skerries for respite vacations that summer.

We had just travelled by minibus from Minsk & had been generously treated to many bottles of vodka on the 7 hour journey. I was then dropped off at an apartment to stay with a family that I had never met (they had no english, I had no russian).

As soon as I walked (stumbled) into the apartment they switched on the TV as a treat for me & we got even more gloriously drunk watching Gerry & Co host the show. My hosts were truly blown away by the Riverdance spectacle too.

A great night! I felt really proud to be Irish.

I was watching it with my parents, and I remember distinctly thinking there was something very ancient and old about the drum combined with the dancing and rhythm.

At home studying for my college finals. My folks had been at the dress rehearsal that afternoon and told me whatever I did not to miss the interval act. So I went to the pub to see it (as you do) and the whole place stopped and watched this thing unfolding in front of them open mouthed. Quite a moment, one I will never forget. Saw the show in San Francisco years later and it was no less breathtaking.

My Mam and Dad got tickets to the dress rehearsal and I remember Dad phoning straight afterwards and telling us to make absolutely certain we watched the interval the following night.
There were buses provided to take people who were attending the dress rehearsal to the car park. On the bus on the way back someone threw a stone through the bus window and it hit my Mam on the head and she ended up in hospital with concussion and missed the show the next night. It's her birthday on the 11th, what a great present it would be to be able to take her and my Dad to the show!
