For Mayo it has to be Andy Moran, he almost single-handedly dragged Mayo out of the spiraling abyss in Ruslip, played great against Galway and dominated the game against the All-Ireland champions. Only Roscommon in the Connacht final managed to keep a lid on him and even then he always looked dangerous when he was fed the ball.

He should, barring a disaster in the semi, have the All-Star his career deserves already in the bag and if Mayo were to simply reach the final I wouldn't bet against him winning the FOTY.

Neill McGee has been excellent as well and often on a man to man basis, not blanket defence. I'd say a cert for a Donegal All Star.
Rory O'Carroll will run him close.

Will be interesting to see the match ups on the 28th - Murphy v O'Carroll and McGee v Connolly/Bernard Brogan

    It'll be a long 3 weeks :(

    McBrearty? Are you serious?

as said, it was a response about the young player of the year. there hasnt been too many stand out contenders for it.

He had 1-3 against Laois also and nearly 2 more goals but for great goalkeeper. Was a good performance also, he has been a bit hit and miss this year to be player of the year unless he plays as well as today again.

Look at the misses he had against Kildare, the horrible shots from outside the 21 in every game in Leinster. I wouldnt even consider him to be Dublins best player this year let alone the best in Ireland.

From Dublin O'Carroll has had an excellent season in my opinion and he certainly deserves an All Star. Alan Brogan has been our main spearhead in attack. Can't see anyone else from Dublin getting nominated unless Bernard throws in a good performance (good by his standards so an excellent performance)

The early demise of Cork has left a place in the h/b .. Brennan or Nolan have a good chance

Glad to see people finally mentioning Lacey, he's been our stand out performer imo closely followed by Murphy and Mc Gee.

I haven't watched a single Kerry game this year but I can guarantee it'll be one of their players that pick up the award, they seem to love Kerry down at HQ :p

Nolan has been our best HB imo. He does have a good chance, its a fair point that Cork wont get many this year.

Ta .. yeah seein as how they only got 4 when winning it last year and 2 of those Kissane and Canty @ h/b, wouldn't argue with either or Michael Shields for that matter .. Aidan Walsh was a mystery imo other than his performance in final.

Hate how the forwards get all the attention:( Very few defenders names being thrown about.

Well its often forwards who win games. But Tomas O'Se, Marc O'Se, Seamus Moynihan and Kieran McGeeney have all won player of the year for outstanding defensive performances.

I'm fairly sure the winner this year will come from the winning team.

16/1 for Michael Murphy is great value for anyone who thinks Donegal will win the All Ireland. If they do win, its very likely that he'd be star man.

from what I have seen of Donegal so far, Lacey would be my bet for Donegal. Is having a super year, and a dead on cert for an all star.

definately, murphy has been class, probably had a major part in every donegal goal this year and his pick up for cassidy's point was wonderfull but with his send off against cavan and a low scoring rate i cant see how he could get it ahead of lacey who has been consistantly brilliant (for years). to be honest i might have the entire donegal half back line ahead of him.....might.

pretty much a dead cert to come from the finalists as all 4 remaining teams have had some great performers. so far we just have probably 10 contenders, next 2 games will really show whos tops.
if i had to mut money on someone tho it would be karl lacey or darran o'sullivan-whichever wins in a very green and gold croker next month getting the award:D

I think Aidan O'Shea of Mayo is very much in line for it and deservedly so.

(Shock horror stinicker dosen't nominate a Kerry gombeen!)

I have to agree that Lacey would certainly be ahead of Murphy for this award. However, rather than the half back line I think Neil Mc Gee would be the next in line for it from the Donegal team. As said before it will certainly come from the All Ireland winning team as each 4 remaining teams have some great contenders!

Maybe its because they play three or four games there every year!

Technically you did he's got Kerry Blood!! :pac:

In my eyes, the leading contenders are:

Kerry - the two O'Sullivans and maybe Bryan Sheehan at midfield (I'll admit that I missed most of the Munster final as I was in Croker for the Leinster hurling final)
Dublin - Rory O'Carroll, Kevin Nolan, Paul Flynn, Alan Brogan
Donegal - Karl Lacey, Neil McGee, Kevin Cassidy, Michael Murphy
Mayo - Andy Moran, Aidan O'Shea

I think Aidan O'Shea is a fine player but he's more suited to his original place in the full-forward line. At midfield he's less a winner of the ball and more a bowling ball - he concussed Donal Ward and knocked over a fair few Cork players too.

Maybe that's what Mayo need in the middle, but I've honestly been more impressed with his brother Seamus this season.

BUT.. if we make the final and Murphy plays to his potential then I would say he would be a stronger contender.. I find it amusing that Paddypower have Colm Mc Fadden as a contender but no Neil Mc Gee

They'll price it up if asked.

For us to make the final, all the names mentioned previously will have to have big games on the day so we will probably be none the wiser for player of the year from a Donegal point of view.

Well the national media love Murphy followed by Lacey so even though Mc Gee has been as good he would be falling behind. Also forwards tend to get most praise and stand out for scores which is why Murphy could nick it!! (all IF the next two games go well)
