Creating external mirrored HD setup for data backup. Advice, please.

I'm a photographer and I supply TIFF image files to a client on DVD.

This client would like to set up a mirrored storage system that is independent of their main IT server. It would be attached to one computer that is used exclusively for image editing/cataloguing.

However, this computer would also be connected to the main system so that image files could be shared throughout the organisation.

Since the files are large and there are now five years of them, a lot of storage is required now and into the future.

Can anyone recommend a HD setup that would fit the bill?

These have been suggested as possible solutions, but size is important. How big can you go? The files are minimum 125Mb, maximum 1Gb and there are lots of them.

I came accross this while I was searching for components
Its a German supplier that most folks on the pc building forum use.

The same range of NAS drives is available from Sharptext here in Ireland(see link below), though their prices are not shown on the site without a trade login.
These seem to be just what you are looking for. There are many models in the range - some with 4 bays, some support 2.5 and 3.5 in drives, some sata 600, all offer hot swap, and all have multiple raid config options.

I would therefore recommend that you give sharptext a buzz and talk to their sales team about your requirements and see what they recommend.

A NAS will do the job for you,just make sure you get 3 years warranty support and a giga lan connection...

Re maths,there are 4 hard drives in 2Tb size,giving you in RAID5 around 5.5Tb in size. For RAID1,then you have (i guess) 2 hdd x 2Tb + 2hdd x 2Tb = 4Tb,real size 3.5Tb.

DVDs,at 5500Gb / 4.5Gb = ... ~ 1000 !

BUT,i will be mad to drop so much amount of business data on a NAS without another backup ! At least,before/after copying each DVD content,i will run a burn2dvd copy...
