I've heard that Tottenham are close to agreeing a deal with Madrid for Luka Modric in the region of €35 million

I really hope that's not true, that's the same amount we've already rejected. After all our tough posturing I hope Levy hasn't folded.

    Surely not.

    Link?

To be fair to Kranjcar, I've seen a different translation of the interview from a Croatian in a different forum.
‘If I were Modric, I would go on strike, too,’ said Kranjcar. ‘To have an offer from Real Madrid is a once-in-a-career opportunity. I’d do anything to get to Santiago Bernabeu'

    What was actually said:

"I don't know what I would do, if I were in Luka's position. To have an offer from Real Madrid is a once-in-a-career opportunity. I'd give anything for a chance to play for Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. It'd be a great privilege to play for them, even for someone like me, who prefers Barcelona!

‘I know the chairman talked to him face to face, last autumn'.

    What was actually said:

"I know the chairman spoke to him face to face, last autumn and promised to let him go.

Levy did everything to protect the interests of the club and make a profit. If you were in Luka’s shoes, you would probably do the same as him.

    What was actually said:

"Levy has done everything to protect the club's interests & profits, but it deceives the public which, I guess, businesses are allowed to do. But, if you were in Luka's shoes, you'd probably act in the same way as him".

'They held me back for two years, until my new club paid what they were asking, and not a pound less.'

    What was actually said:

"For the three years I was at White Hart Lane, I never had any serious negotiation with the club president or directors. There was no need to. It is not customary to call the president of the club, even if you are his next-door neighbour, as was the case for me, when I lived in Cuffley. From my own experience, I know that it's very difficult for a player to terminate a contract. Remember Berbatov? And I know from my own situation. I was left hanging on for two years, until my current employer offered the money Spurs were looking for - and not a Euro less!"

‘Though lots of people will say it’s not like Tottenham, if you look at history, Dynamo Kiev is bigger than Spurs.

    What was actually said:

Niko was asked what he thought about his new home city and club. He said:

Kiev isn't London, but it's very good for city living. In football terms, things are close to perfection for me. The club is big on tradition and values its fans. Many will say: 'It's not like Tottenham, though'. But, if you look through their history, it could be said that Dynamo is a bigger club than Spurs."

Seems like that this is a case of the Daily Mail rocking the boat to me.

Nothing we didn't already know, if a big European club comes in and matches our valuation Luka can leave.

He should set up a 1800 dial a quote number....!

I wonder how Modric feels at this stage. I hope it's true that PSG matched our valuation. That would mean we accepted a bid and told him he was free to go and he refused to go and didn't hand in a transfer request.

Last summer his dream was to play for Chelsea. We refused to sell.

This summer his dream was to play for Madrid. They didn't want him enough to pay the asking price.

He can't say we stopped him from leaving since we clearly said he can leave and he didn't even make a transfer request.

He can't say we outpriced him from the move since PSG were willing to pay the asking price.

I hope he feels like a fool.

What would you's prefer!? Him to stay or go!? I personally wanted him to go a few weeks back thinking a deal would have been done by now. All I want is for this saga to be brought to an end before the start of the season. I do think AVB will get the best out of him but I genuinely don't know whats best for spurs right now

I kinda forgave him last season but I've had enough, he is forever tainted for me now.

On the other hand its probably best that he stays at this stage. We're running out of time to spend any money we would make off him.

I'm sure he would "get his head right" fairly soon if he stays.

Can't be mad at him for wanting to go, if anyone on this site had a chance to move to a bigger firm and earn 3-4 times as much along with the increased exposure they'd be gone asap, and you're lying if you say otherwise. I'm a bit pissed for the way he conducted himself during the whole fiasco, but if he stayed I wouldn't lose any sleep. We're not really in a position to refuse the services of a world class player. Don't get me wrong, atm I really don't like the chap, but he has done an awful lot for us, enough that he should be supported if he stays. I really wish the whole thing was over and done with, if he goes there'll be big pressure to find a replacement in the time left, and if he does eventually stay he's doing himself no favours by all his carry-on.

Yeah I guess you're right, but I'm more than a bit pissed at the way he conducted himself. I'll support him if he plays for us again but not sure I'll ever like him.

I'd agree with THFC. Don't like how he acted during this whole saga, but i'll be quick to forgive him if he stays and plays well.

    We're a fickle bunch i guess :pac:

I'm not angry with him for wanting to play for a bigger club, earn more money and win more medals

    But

He was a very silly boy not to show up at the airport for the US tour
Now I'm afraid he's just another self centered, precious, footballer tosspot
Its the berbetov situation all over again......

These situations highlight how broken the integrity of the game is these days.
Players don't give a **** about anyone but themselves, it's become impossible to love a player these days, they're all just passing through, taking the piss out of supporters on Premier League the gravy train.

Heros my arse, it's just a job to them

Yeah that's it exactly, I can understand a professional wanting to move to a bigger job and I understand that I can't expect professionals to love Spurs as more than just a job.

But to sign a massive contract of 6 years and then the next 2 summers to mess the club about and act so unprofessionally, that annoys me. Can't respect that. If it's just a job, do your fukcin job and be professional and quit moaning about it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,395 ✭✭✭Hatch99

I don't think there is any way back for him now. He has burned his bridges far to much. To take the piss and more or less give the 2 fingers to the club 2 summers on the trot is disgraceful. Flog him for 30m, nobody is irreplaceable.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,183 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

I can understand a player of his quality being offered 3 times his wages, and having his head turned though. If someone came along and offered me triple my wages, i'd be outta here so bloody fast. While we may not like it, it is a job to them. I'm sure they love their jobs, but it's not like Luka was born and raised in Tottenham.

Doesn't mean i like how he acted though, and should have done it in a much more respectful manner.

He's be sold one way or another before the window closes. Sadly for us it will probably be during the last week and DL will sign some 35+ year old with dodgy knees on loan as his replacement.

It looks to me like he is staying

Madrid and spurs are miles apart on the valuation so it looks like back to training for Luca

He he does end up staying he better give it his all and play well. None of this winging and moaning.

I hope he'll mature after this blip, he's damaged his reputation immensely with his carry on and doesn't deserve a place in the squad over players who want to play, I'd like to see someone make him fight for his starting place as if AVBs clean slate is true then modders is the only player with a dirty slate on the squad.

    Adios Luka.
Did very well for us, soured by the ending.
Very good player, but as always, nobody is irreplaceable.

The only little bonus I'm getting from this is that RVP has stolen the headlines. I've an Arsenal mate is all over FB calling him "scum, one season wonder", makes me smile :D

Thus concludes the most tedious transfer saga of all time! It might render the poll a little redundant too.

I think Real got him for a good price. They'll probably let Kaka go now, although his wages will be a stumbling block.

    Adiós Luka ye wee bollox!

Well it seems he was told he could leave for Madrid last season, just hope there’s no malicious comments from him after the deal is completed.

I don’t harbour any ill feelings towards him. He was a fantastic player for us, should of weighed in with more goals. Looks like we made a tidy profit if it’s in the region of 33 -38. I’ll be keeping a beady eye on Madrid this season.

Just waiting for Redknapp to comment on it.

I really hope it's more money than Sky reported.

I don't understand why they told him last season he could join Real this season. I thought his dream last season was to play for Chelsea?

It's hard to keep up with Luka.

Is it realistic that we will get a replacement before the transfer window shuts? Would Sig be up to the job, haven’t seen much of him? Surely a striker would be tops on the priority list with the funds available?

We have one of the best MF's in the EPL even without Modric, i will die inside if we spend £20M on a midfielder and dont buy a striker.

i dont know if i agree with this now. ye maybe we do compared with most teams. but we're trying to qualify for the CL. if you look at our competition in man city, united, chelsea and arsenal, our midfield lacks the player (which was modric) who makes the team tick. the creative player, who starts the attacking moves, dictate the tempo of the game and that can create chances out of nothing.

with modric in our team i thought our midfield was stronger than uniteds on paper but they always produced the results. arsenal, they do have the creativity however we only saw it at times last season, maybe our midfield is better than theirs, we'll just have to wait and see. city and chelsea are miles ahead regarding creative midfielders.

i just dont think the likes of thudd, jenas or livermore are capable of replacing modric. modric is a different class imo. sandro and parker are too defensive. i really hope i'm wrong but i do think we need to sign a similar replacememt for modric.

back to my point. maybe we do have one of the best midfields in the EPL, we are in the top 5 for sure. but lacking a good creative player maybe reflects a poor standard of midfields in the EPL?

I agree with nipps. With Modric, Parker/Sandro, Bale & Lennon we had a great, fast and balanced midfield. Without Modric, and regardless of whether we go with 3/4/5 in the middle, we will not have the same threat. An adequate replacement for Modric must be installed, someone creative with a good engine and Moutinho fits that bill nicely. The problem is that two immovable objects will be or already are clashing over the price so we'll have to see what happens.
