every job serves a purpose. the purpose of people standing in henry street wearing signs is to keep food on their table. dont be so critical.

if ya want to criticise someone, how about them soccer players kickin a ball around and ridin women for a couple a grand a week. now thats pointless

DAA employees. What do they do? They just walk around in those tops that look like someone just threw up on them.

I came back through terminal 2 a few weeks back...

One girl was standing at the top of the passport queue telling / shouting at people which lane to go through despite the huge open/closed signs above the booths.

I also saw another standing there holding the end of the tape thingy (the things used when going through security / at bank queues etc.). Directing people around him.

Meanwhile out in the baggage hall, 6 belts were spinning but no luggage in sight. And did I mention we spent 15mins sitting on the plane outside the gate as there was no pully thing available to line the plane up? Deplorable.

All worthy of executive bonuses and high airport taxes.

    "Most pointless job in Ireland"

In Ireland right now, it is pointless being an sna because there are like 5 jobs in the whole country at the moment! (obvious exaggeration!)

My son requires a full time sna in order to attend school btw!
I am well aware that it is an essential job!

I think I might just stop posting on online forums!

Oh yeah. All those guards, doctors, nurses, firemen, teachers, coastguards, postal workers... totally pointless. And all the people who make sure that the above people are able to do their jobs... totally pointless too.

Yes but if you take nurses for example, there is far to many of them, so yes many of them are pointless. Go to any hospital ward. You will see one or two nurses running around doing all the work, and another ten sitting in the nurses station reading 'hello' or 'heat' and bitching about the ones doing the work.

If secondary teachers worked more than 22 hours a week, which they should, you would see that alot of them are pointless. This goes for alot of public sector departments.

Just so you know, we have twice as many nurses per patient than france yet they have the best health care in the world.

Maybe they should work in other government departments to make up the remaining of the normal 39 hours per week and also in the summer and xmas and such.

The County Councils... I've done work experience 3 times in them, 3/4 of the staff could be replaced by computers and there is very little checks done on anyone. Plus half their departments don't even help the public, they're just there to run the place!

I think the teachers should be paid something like €15 per hour for every hour the work rather than get a salary. Because as it is most of them earn in access of €50 an hour if you break down the salary. If they can't make ends meat they should go and get a full time job.

Do you even know what they do, I suppose you don't even know they are currently deployed to the Lebanon to try bring peace to they area, and protect the civilians from the conflict. Not to mention the work they do at home, bank escorts, bomb disposal, and the defence forces as a whole: maratime patrol, air ambulance, garda air suppost and countless other roles. Doesn't seem very pointless to me.

When you (or your loved-ones) are trapped in your car-wreck at the side of the road, you'd prefer those pointless firemen , paramedics, ambulance drivers, gardaí, hospital porters, nurses, doctors etc to be elsewhere, in some 'useful occupation?

You'd like to educate your children at home?
    (ans mind them 24/7/52?)

Pity your parents didn't bother to give you an education.

€50 per hour is €1.67 per child per hour. (most classes have + 30 pupils)

How much do you pay your babysitter?
How much do you pay the creche/childminder?

Try minding thiirty children for six hours per day, never mind teaching them!! You will soon realise that there are some jobs which simply must have shorter hours and longer breaks.

are they in ledanon to disband Hezbollah ? No , so how can they bring peace.

security for bank deposits = Armed Gardaí could do this job
the Maritime patrol = 1 or 2 boats to patrol the entire coast of ireland,
with the amount of drugs flooding into the country , there may as well be no maritime patrol = pointless

No they are their because hezbollah wont dare to try something while they are there, therefore bringing peace to the region.

Why have armed gardaí doing it when the army are trained and are doing it anyway? It would just cost more money to equip and train gardaí when the job is being done perfectly well already.

Well in fact there there is nowhere near enough ships at the moment to carry out the patrols. Two aircraft are the main workhorses for this role though.

Do you seriously think that most nurses sit reading magazines all day?! I'll admit it's been a while since I've been to a hospital, but the last I saw, they were run off their feet - there's a moratorium on hiring, so a lot of hospitals are understaffed. Nurses are not pointless!

And as for teachers, this same argument is made all the time. Teachers don't just have 22 hours a week - they have to prepare classes the night before, make slideshows or notes, correct homework and tests... If they even do 2 hours work after school every day, that's 32 hours. I had teachers in school that definitely spent more than that on their work - some of them were teaching extra classes for free before and after school to get the huge courses covered.

I am not a public sector employee, nor have I ever been one, but I think people are very quick to jump at these people. It's easy to judge them all on the big managers and higher positions that are paid a lot, but I think you'll find that most of them are nowhere near that scale.
