I have always re newed tax online.
My tax is €88 but should it not be charged at the vintage rate now that it is 30yrs ?
Also am i now classed as vintage with insurers?

Hi, the tax for a vintage vehicle is 48 euro per year but don't forget that the age would go by month as well as year.
Perhaps the registration/tax month has changed over the years?.
The cert for my 1986 camper just shows the year, I imported it from U.K., so in my case the mth. shouldn't matter. Check your cert.
Can't help you with insurance, best to ring Dolmans although they are not to good at answering their 'phones at times.

    Best of luck.

hi chaps, I've just purchased a 1977 campervan and am wondering what my best options might be for tax&insurance etc

does the vintage bit factor into things or will I just be getting normal camper insurance?

Jesus lads pay the €88 quid - the country needs your few bob - do it before the rate goes up in the budget. Now insurance is a different matter - surely an older vehicle (20+ years) should have a loading not a discount!!!!

pay what 88 quid? I'm not looking to evade a tax. I just want to know if one applies to my vehicle. dunno if things have changed, but I think if it's over 30 years old it may be exempt, ...so I'm certainly not going to go looking to pay a tax if it isn't applicable to me.

Insurance I'm not really sure about. going to ring a few places tomorrow but just wanted to see if anyone here might have some suggestions for where to start

No comment on "Pay the 88euro" but Re insurance, years ago in the UK the loading was on the annual mileage and the premium calculated accordingly. I believe you could set your own mileage figure.
This worked well because owners of vintage cars spend more time polishing than driving:D.

Yes, re road tax Tedious Bore. Over 30 years applies.

    Hi Tedious Bore,

It's nice to hear of a Camper that's older than mine:).

    What's the make?.

hi, it's a bedford. says 60,000 miles on the clock but not sure how reliable that would be

I recently changed our 77 VW Bay over to vintage. It's just complete the RF111 form (available online), and send it to your tax office once it's over 30 years. It came back within a few days.

As far as I'm aware, the campervan insurers aren't bothered by the revenue tax class. I haven't looked into vintage insurance yet (will do at renewal), but I believe a lot of them have mileage restrictions and number of passagers etc and require you to be a member of a club. The number of passengers would be an issue for us.

Every euro helps these days, but to be honest my motivation was a nervousness of getting a 77 aircooled vehicle through the motorcaravan test (especially emissions). The road test exemption stops at 1980.

Slightly OT: A '77 vehicle should not be tested for emissions regardless, the first EEC emission standards only apply for '78 and newer petrols or from '80 on if diesel. I used to have a '78 Escort at some stage and was always miffed that it needed a test where a friend with a '77 didn't.

    Tax question has been answered.

Dolmen will insure you at a standard rate. There's no loading for the age but you will have to provide an engineers report with photo's of gas connections etc. Premium is about €350 as long as you have another policy for a daily driver.

They generally don't answer the phone in the camper section but they do get back pretty quick when you leave a message.

Sorry just re read your post and see you already with Dolmen. The policy and premium is the same regardless.

On the basis that, at the moment, we are not legally required to have a test done on our campers none of the above applies regardless of any EU regs.

So I was told, after the forms went in! But that was my logic at the time, even if it was on the basis of misinformation.

Regarding the tax, I thought there was a change made to the eligibilty criteria for vintage tax a couple of years ago. 30 years was amended to vehicles registered before 1980? Did a quick search but can't find anything to back this up.

I have a 1976 VW type 2. I have it insured with Dolmen. Just got my renewal and its €335. Its a camper van insurance policy rather than a specific policy for a vintage vehicle. This includes European breakdown cover and home start, €5k contents cover, awning cover, and generator cover. I would imagine that these would not be covered under the vintage scheme?

No mention of any other thing than vehicles over 30 years old.

30 years stands for the road tax, it was the exemption from roadworthy tests that stopped at 1980.

You'd have to look at the individual schemes - I know some of them have restrictions on mileage and number of passengers.

We went with AA Rescue Plus to go with our bay in addition to the dolmen cover in the end. Any breakdowns, you can get it towed where ever you want (i.e. home or a specialist) rather than nearest garage if it's a major issue. Plus they send a mechanic, so if it's something relatively simple, and if you have a selection of spares, they may get you going there and then (I'm trying to learn the mechanics, but at the roadside...). I'm not sure with standard "recovery" you'll necessarily get a qualified mechanic.

I recently got my life long wanted camper- an 87 vw leisuredrive. Had loads of people telling me to go Dolmen, got quoted 360€. My neighbour told me to try Campion- I got it for €205 plus an extra €25 to join the IVETA group. Restriction in 5000 km per year, and open drive for all drivers with a full license between the ages of 25-72. Hope this helps!! Ps- buying the camper was the best thing I've ever done

Is it classic insurance or something? Whose the underwriter? What happens if you need to do more that 5000km we do a minimum of 7000 per year.

Usage on form says vintage and sdp.
    Underwriters are FBD-
As for the excess mileage I'm not sure I be honest but may be worth giving them a call to ask. They may have differing scales to suit?

Increased mileage means a slight increase in premium. Does with first Ireland.

Good luck with your Leisuredrive. I have an 87 Karisma , just doing a top end rebuild at the moment.
