Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Just back from the "Minnie Clarke" sportive in Crossmaglen.
80k on a really nice scenic route.
Nice rolling foothills with some long sweeping fast descents, great fun!
Marshalling was excellent, soup and sambos at the end.
Only negative was being chased by a large sectarian dog near Newtonhamilton. :pac:
Thanks to Slieve Gullion Wheelers for a good day out.

Felt rubbish this morning so slept in for a bit. Woke up again and still felt rubbish. Headed out for some hill repeats as I didn't fancy going far. The climbs over here in the Lake District are insane. Been over here for 9 months and I don't think I've been up a climb that didn't have a small section in it of at least 15%.

The two climbs I went over today topped out at +20%. Even with a compact and having done them numerous times it's still so very painful. Honestly don't know how I'm in the top 10 for a segment on one of the climbs.

All in all it was 32km with 927m of climbing.

Grand spin. Had a sore knee this morning so I was in two minds about heading out. Told the missus I'd not be long, maybe back in a few minutes if it played up so I headed off and thankfully it didn't bother me at all.

Longwood-Trim-Tara and back. Had a nice coffee and chocolate thingy on top of Tara but found the legs a bit dead for the spin home afterwards. I've noticed that happening a few times after a break so maybe next time I'll just keep on going and see if it makes a difference. Or maybe I'm just not as fit as I think.
    Anyway, 75.7 km @29.8kmh in 2:32

I was working today but Pater Scone did the climb from Manor Kilbride to the Crossroads and went on a few km in the Laragh direction before descending back down to Manor Kilbride.

He was making enquiries about the loop home from Laragh.

....I guess this means the Boardman was a good investment.

Anyone see the crashed car along the featherbeds ? Looked pretty bad. Must of lost control and swerved off the road. Hope they're all right.

You must have made a right turn on that junction at a bend instead of taking the next right a little bit further on. An easy mistake to make. That road back to the Military Road is a bit of a drag alright.

That's exactly what happened! I'm not out that way too often and wanted to dodge the busier road. I'll know for next time. Still, it's new terrain which is always good.

70km from Sligo to Bundoran and back, passed out a couple of cyclists too, they would probably say they weren't going fast but I'd like to think the boards kit I had on for the first time made me faster than usual...

I've been meaning to try Strava out for a while and did so today. After having a bit of a root around here delving into the stats and whatnot I have to say it's definitely an improvement on MapMyRide. Obviously, the validity of placements on segments is more reliable as there's a lot more cycles logged, but it also seemed to lighter on the battery which is huge!

Only thing I'd say is that I don't know if the Average speed they give me is for 'moving time' or 'elapsed time' (i'm sure someone here might know!)

I took a full week off the bike after doing just shy of 800km the week before on holidays and felt like tackling a few hills. Did Vico road three times, the Bray side of Killiney hill twice and the Fitzpatricks Castle side once. Legs felt good after the break!

    http://www.strava.com/activities/191778254

    average: 26.2 kmph
    distance: 47.1 km
    elevation: 738

Going to tackle the Wicklow 200 route at the weekend, if I finish in under 10 hours with good few breaks thrown in I'll be delighted!

Took the mountain bike (Giant xtc 2.5) out on the roads today for some hilly action. Couldn't wait any longer for my new road bike to arrive (end of the month)

Despite the huge front suspension and fat knobbly tires I still managed to hit a top speed of 50.4km on a descent. Great craic.

Of course some little **** of a jack russell had to chase me up one of the hills. Little ****

Back on the bike after a week of being lazy.

Did 45km today which pushed me over the 20,000km on the bike. Happy days

I passed Serge Betsen (former French & Biaritz wing forward) climbing Molls. Gap yesterday.

Is there some rugby thing on? Saw a few posts on twitter.

Yep, a group of retired internationals (Wallace brothers and Gallimh) are running a Mizen-Malin charity. Lots of retired internationals.

When I got to top of Molls there was a big gang (circa 50) ready to cycle stage 2. I didn't realise until I got home that Peter Winterbottom was there. As a kid both him and Mick Skinner were really big heroes of mine.

Late start tonight, headed out the door at 1940ish...got up Cruagh Road to viewpoint non stop to the top. That was pretty mega.

It was full on dark by the time I was descending back down Kilakee road, the 800lu cateye paid for itself on the way down, I was conscious of the extra risk but have a pretty good light set up and it was apparent that being nervous wouldn't be much help so I just relaxed and focused on technique. Watching the strips of illuminated cateyes winding away down the tunneled road was actually beautiful.

Have crossed the Rubicon with the SPD-Sls have a knack for getting moving 9 times out of 10 with them and I no longer suffered in Traffic coming home as a result.

I haven't done over 30k for about 20 years so today was a novelty for me.

    Castlebar-->Balinrobe--Claremorris--Castlebar. 76kms 15.6 km/h 4h:50m:00s

I took it VERY cushy as I had no idea how to pace myself and didn't want to be exhausted 3/4 way around. Well I was totally fine physically by the time I got home guess I could do the 100 easily some other day. Took 20 mins break in Claremorriss for tea and bread roll.

It was really uneventful. No near misses or anything. Some heafty lorries passed me on the narrow road between Caremorris and Balinrobe presumably carrying horses for the Ballinrobe races !? They were so big and long they reminded me of the opening scene of Star Wars as they passed. YIEKES ! I started to daydream at the 3/4 point. How long I wasn't paying attention I don't know. Double Yiekes !

I just realized that the same distance I traveled today would have taken me from all the way to Galway city . That's a nice upgrade from Castlebar. Does anyone know if a bus eireann coach would take my bike in the luggage carrier for the journey home ? Thanks.

They will but if I were you, I'd take the bus there and cycle back. Just so that if there isn't room for the bike, or there's any argument about it, you're not stuck in Galway :)

I go up Sallygap from time to time, and always wonder which spot is "the viewing point"? Is it at the car park where you can turn off towards Cruagh/Pine Forest direction, or is it a few km further up looking out over a couple of lakes? Also, the Hellfire Club? Thanks!

I always thought the viewing point was the place where the icecream truck sometimes is coming up from Stocking Lane.

The Hellfire club club is after that stinker of a short hill at Mount Venus coming up the same way.

    Viewpoint is here https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.2404118,-6.3195532,374m/data=!3m1!1e3

Basically where you can look down on Dublin Bay with the single turbine in view.

    Hellfire is here https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.2521259,-6.3251392,376m/data=!3m1!1e3

You pass the entrance to the Hellfire carpark going up Stocking Lane, just on the RHS past "Timbertrove" and the Massey wood enterance on the LHS as you go up. Map shows hellfire club building on LHS and Stocking Lane on RHS as you look at it.

42Km in 1hr:50 this afternoon. The legs are slowly coming back. Can't wait till I've lost some more of the gut, so I can lift the legs a bit higher :D

The Phoenix Park was lovely today, very little traffic around. 0 nods / waves returned by fellow cyclists, but a nice man did wave his bits at me on the Military road :0

There were two lunatic roadies going flat out down the cycle path on Chesterfield ave. They blasted straight through the Furze Rd junction without checking for cars / bikes turning in. Zero regard shown for the safety of other people on the path either. "It's shockin Joe, Strava has them all gone mad".

If anyone passes a fat lad on a singlespeed in the Park, say hello ! I promise to wave back :D

Sneaked out for an early lunch up Cruagh - Glencullen and back down for 22k in 56 minutes, and a sandwich made and consumed in the remaining 4. Glorious out there.

Cruagh - Kippure Mast - Luggala - Enniskerry.

Cracking day out for a spin. Even up at Kipppure there was still some nice heat in the air.

Was up by Glencullen yesterday lunch, where they're laying fresh tarmac. Sticky, sticky, sticky. I reckon my tyres are now a couple of mm thicker.
