I had a missed call from a British number and called back only to find out it's a marketing company! Has anyone received a call from these people? More importantly how did they get my number,

Mods feel free to mice to a more apt forum as wasnt sure where to put it.

I don't know about ICM but I got a call from the Royal College of Surgeons and when I asked them how they got my number the person on the line said they were dialling every possible number and talking to the people that answered.

Perhaps someone pressed the wrong buttons and got through to you by mistake? It does happen.

    there's a mobile number

    there's a dublin number

I've just made them up - I could call them and ask them market research question and if they answer good, if they say they don't want to answer then fair enough too.

Randon generated phonecalls provide the best market research response. If you don't want to answer, you just say that and that'll be it. No one gets hurt and its relatively pain free. And no, there's nothng illegal whatsoever about it.

Why roll your eyes? It does happen. Many a time I have done it when I worked in a call centre. Your number is 1 digit away from someone elses number so its not uncommon.

Now having said that they could be calling random numbers or they got your number from well known companies who sell their lists on.

so can I have your number then, so that I can forward it to multiple market research companies, and let them harass you night and day

I don't post much here, so don't know if there's an underlying issue here. The op asked how a phone number was procured, I gave the most likely answer. If they called me at unsocial hours, it would be considered harassment, but most of these company's are responsible as they need to get as accurate an outcome as possible and pissed off participants don't provide this.
