Had a look at this thread and short listed.

My preference would be up beat books nothing too serious and no horrors.

I dont want to know too much about the book before I read it. (or it could ruin it)

    Thanks

    Possible short list

    A Goat's Song, Dermot Healy
    Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
    Cryponomicon - Stephenson
    The Tesseract - Alex Garland
The Salmon of Doubt by Douglas Adams
One Hundred Years of Solitude - Marquez
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson

    That's light reading :)

The one that springs to mind is The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Feelgood, but without too much sentiment. Still has a bit of bite.

A Goat's Song is excellent, but not exactly upbeat.
Catch 22 is funny and unusual. Not too heavy either.
Cryptonomicon is excellent, perfect holiday reading.
One Hundred Years can be a bit heavy in the middle, but also great.
Fear and Loathing is manic and short.

It all depends on what you are into, but I'd go for the first three in that you have a good combination of variety, quality and readability. In another recent thread I was recommending A Suitable Boy and Lonesome Dove as amongst the best travel/holiday reads around.

    Thanks.

    Anyone else got an opinion?

Shantaram would be a great travel/holiday read.

A fantastic book - it's fiction based loosely on the author's real life experiences as an escaped con who finds a incredible life in India. Have a read of the reviews if you haven't heard of it/read it.

I love Catch 22, it's one of my all time favourite books. Douglas Adams is great too, I was really into the Salmon of Doubt, unfortunately he died before finishing it so you don't find out how it would have ended, which is frustrating!
