Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

NoGi Entry Categories based on training hours

Forgive me if this is a stupid idea, but it may be possible to reduce the risk of unintentional sandbagging in NoGi competitions by asking the following on the entry form:

1). On average, how many hours a week do you train?
2). How many years of previous grappling training do you have?(Grappling,Wrestling, BJJ, Judo, Sambo, etc)
3). When did you start training (DD/MM/YYYY)?
    4). Date of competition((DD/MM/YYYY))?
5). If you hold a belt in the BJJ, what colour? If not, please select white

Then apply this information to a predetermined range in excel to say which category someone should enter in the competition.

See the attached for an example where i have used the following range:

    Beginner <200 hours
    Intermediate >200 < 500, or Blue
    Advanced >500 < 1000, or Purple
    Elite > 1000, or Brown/Black

    Thoughts?

For the example attached, i have attributed an additional weighting of
0.33*average training hours*number of years experience. This should bring previous grappling experience like Judo or Sambo into play when deciding which category to enter.

I like the idea. But I don't like the division it tells me I should enter!

Considering most people don't bother their hole spelling their clubs/names correctly, fill in the incorrect weight categories, or frequently "have problems paying" with the simplest of entry systems, I wouldn't have a lot of confidence that this would work.

Sandbagging is inevitable but it's only ever one or two guys per tournament in the novice division. Just leave them to their comfort zone it's their loss in the end.

Probably just a few more round robin style tournaments would work. While I really like the thought of this idea as I've gone from training 3 times a week at BJJ to 1. So wouldn't have the confidence to enter any tournaments until I'm up in Dublin because I know the other guys in my weight would be training 4/5 times a week.

It's easy enough to make it a drop down. It would reduce unintentional sandbagging, not the other kind

Oh and Hanley. 120hours and white belt is still Beginner/Novice, isnt it? Edit: its borderline which excel deems as intermediate ;)

I don't believe that there is such a thing as unintentional sandbagging. A guy with five years of wrestling knows he shouldn't be in the beginner division. Someone who's been training for ten months and makes excuses about only training twice per week and one of those is in a gi and he was sick for two weeks and their instructor was away for a week and zzzzzzz ... know that they don't belong in the -6 months division.

    They're just codding themselves.

I've more than five years Judo experience, but when it comes to BJJ I flounder and feel like a fish out of water.

You'll be needing a sturgeon when he's done

Barracuda avoided all this if he'd put OP straight before he'd started the thread
