...what would be the 3 things you would -

Miss the most & Miss the least

I'm talking about aside from people and friends etc for missing the most and not the Irish in Bondi for the least (which has a few threads of its own!!)

Mainly just things that are not at home or things we became accustomed to over here.

    For me...

    Miss the most

    - Living beside a (warm) beach and bright warm mornings even in Winter!
    - NRL and wealth of live sport in general
    - Beer O'Clock on a Friday
    - Sourdough bread!
    - Wednesday Steak night in the local RSL!

    Miss the least

    - Price of clothes, sporting equipment and price of goods in general
    - Train stations in the middle of summer
    - Such flippant use of the word c*nt!
    - The Taxi Drivers and their choice of routes!

Feel free to discuss as you wish but really want to get an idea of what people have grown to love and or dislike about Australia!

Don't forget the nice general manners of everyday folks with their wellwishes, you won't get that in many places back home.

It was the one thing i had got accustomed to and it soon deminished in the first few weeks after arriving home the last time, but it was winter :(,that excuse has long faded though .

I WILL NOT MISS TV IN AUSTRALIA. Holy craps its so bad. Old tv shows, useless american tv show, Swamp this and log that.....Ads, ads, ads, ads. come on, yesh, 90 min movies lasting 21/2 hours!!!
And the drama everything is. Masterchef is one of the biggest culprits! 5 MINUTES LEFT....4 MINUTES AND 53 SECONDS LEFT, etc
News reports every 5 mins, ACA??? Biggest load of rubbish, trying to be dramatic and just sounding insincere. I think i saw a show on sunday with no ads. I fainted near the end because i was so surprised there was no ads. Missed the end of it:D
COME ON AUSTRALIA, YOU DONT NEED THAT MANY ADS OR THAT MUCH NEWS!!!

I hate the ads, endless, for every 1hr program there has to be at least 20 mins of ads, all the same sh!te insurance ads or whatnot.
I would not miss the public transport either, very dirty, packed & way too expensive.

I would definitely miss the food, so much good fresh stuff and a good mix of cultures.
I would miss warm Summers and bbqs and picnics on the weekends.
I would miss the vibe of Melbourne and the fact that there's always something on and someone to see.

I would not miss the commercial media in Australia, TV or newspaper, sensationalist, tabloid rubbish all of it. (except the majority of SBS and ABC stuff - ABC has no ads!)
I would not miss the audacious and open casual racism and bigotry of some of the natives, encouraged by said media.
I would not miss Melbourne Winters! Brrr!

All in all I'm happier here since I stopped watching TV and reading papers. When I do encounter commercial media I tend to get very angry....

The best has to be having an ad break just before the end credits. Wait through five minutes of ads for credits. I couldn't believe it

    My well paid job

The distance from my family and friends in England and Ireland

    Things I'll miss
    Hot summers

    Things I won't miss
Loud and screechy voices (Aussie women are LOUD)
High cost of food, drinks, clothes and basically everything
Getting up at 06:00 to go to work
Government trying to control all aspects of life
Living in the most isolated city in the world (Perth)
    Dreadful TV programs and adverts

Hmmmm..... with that list of moans, it may be time to head home.

  • Registered Users Posts: 365 ✭✭doriansmith

    For Wellington

    I'll miss the most:
    -Decent summers compared to Ireland
-The great work-life balance & being treated like a human being by employers
-The view when walking around Wellington Harbour
-Living in the city centre with everything you need within a few minutes walk
    -Monteith's cider!

    I won't miss:
    -The low wages
-Really high cost of living, over $2 for a tomato last time I was grocery shopping
-Terrible clothes shopping, quality & choice-wise
-The geographical isolation. NZ is so far from everywhere!
    -Fear of earthquakes

    -Monteith's cider!

Spot on, from my time in Melbourne this was my feeling on it. I would add to the things I don't miss about living there is the sheer distance from home, sounds simplistic but it had a real impact on me and someone mentioned Nanny state, the first thing I remember from Melbourne was being warned about crossing the road when there was a red man at the lights, FFS I'm not 7!!

Did you cross when the red man was on?

A pedestrian approaching or at an intersection, or
another place on a road, with traffic lights, but
without pedestrian lights, must comply with this
    rule.
    Penalty: 2 penalty units

That's about 244 bucks ? A nanny state would have just given you the ticket.

Noo, it's delish! And I've always hated cider, think Bulmers is mank. Just love that one.

I was walking across to meet an estate agent, she seen me through the window and told me that the last person who she seen had just gotten a $100 fine for crossing when there was a red man (and no traffic!!) proper nanny state carry on

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,556 ✭✭✭Slunk

I got done at flinders street a few weeks ago. 6am and no traffic about. Four cops on each corner.
What are you running for? Eh give you one guess. Apparently I'm getting a $60 fine for not waiting on the green man. Pure money making. Friend was stopped at southern cross but SHE got a warning.
And no i wasn't been smart at the time. Yes sir no sir. Got me nowhere. Needed a bigger chest.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,333 ✭✭✭Zambia

Rest assured Slunk if you have not got it by now its not coming. But seriously 4 cops on each corner I would be shocked if you did not get a ticket. Its like giving them the finger??

Enda occasionally operations are ran with plain clothes guys doing this. When I arrived in Aus I saw one in Geelong it does not happen at all times. However as I quoted the law is there. If no one ever got a ticket for it there would be no piont in making it illegal.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,556 ✭✭✭Slunk

I wasn't thinkin they were there for that. Thought maybe an accident or something. Then when hey start shouting at me it dawned on me. Damn, j walking. Wasn't even awake enough to play the dumb tourist. Was about three or four weeks ago. Hopefully it doesn't arrive.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,333 ✭✭✭Zambia

They where on traffic instruction if they did not shout at you the senior connies would be shouting at them.

If the ticket did not arrive 2 weeks after being issued it wont arrive. Plus the cops in Melbourne are on strike chances are they will not issue tickets of that sort.
