Hoolahan would be the obvious candidate for a call-up, but is probably too attacking.

Andrews out with a groin strain, Fahey and Wilson injured too. So that leaves the uninspiring duo of Whelan and Gibson. I think I've finally accepted we're just destined to have a s**t central midfield forever.

Very convenient! All too similar a story if this rules him out, more than likely an injury that will be sore til wed healed come Saturday

whats wrong with Wilson this time ?

I'm beginning to have suspicions, I must admit. Maybe Martinez doesn't want to risk his best player in friendlies? Perhaps Wilson still hasn't made up his mind about the North?

Really hope they're assessed by the FAI medical staff. If they acknowledge there's something wrong with them, then fair enough.

Marc Wilson and Jon Walters out. A creaky Midfield beckons. The only centre mids we have are Glenn Whelan & Darron Gibson. Unless Trap considers Clark an option.

Surely Trap has to push the boat out and call in some wildcards.

Would like to see Wes Hoolahan called in but alas Trap will not do that.

The central midfield is just depressing. I wish Trap would realise Whelan + Andrews/Gibson doesn't work and call up Wes Hoolahan. Thinking of not watching this now, was really looking forward to seeing McCarthy and Coleman. The only saving grace is Kilbane and McShane aren't there.

Have to say I have absolutely no interest in this match. Players should be concentrating on the new season with their club. Madness having a friendly on now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,133 ✭✭✭Stevecw

Seriously weak midfield at this stage. Wes Hoolahan def worth a shout and why not bring in someone like Ronan Finn a proper cm too. For a game like this when down so many why not bring in a player or 2 from Rovers or whoever. As soon as they go to England they will be in, like Fahey etc.

From that squad it will be

    Given
    Kelly St Ledger O'Dea Ward
    Duff Whelan Gibson Hunt
Cox Long/ Doyle Keane 45 mins each together

    There's only one qualifier on.

Theres always an International break before the start of the season in Aug.. Theres even qualifiers on. Not everything revolves around the Premier league you know, albeit, nearly everyone one of our players play in it but theres nothing that can be done.

Sure even England themselves are playing.

Nothing to do with the Premiership. There's club friendlies being played, European club qualifiers on now and players will have trained hard preseason - too much to soon imo.

Only qualifier is NI v Faroes.

Load of what should be good friendlies on including Spain v Italy, England v Holland, Germany v Brazil etc...but at this time of the season its never gonna work.

Chelsea’s Conor Clifford will join up with the Republic of Ireland’s senior squad ahead of Wednesday’s international friendly against Croatia at the Aviva Stadium.

Can't understand why he called up this chap and not someone like Hoolahan or Sammon. I have never seen this chap play and I'm pretty certain he has never played for Chelsea.

A bit of a strange one, I must admit. Trap must be certain about his potential. if I was Wes Hoolahan I'd just give up on the idea of a call up under Trap's management right now.

Strange decision alright.I've seen him play a few times and is pretty good. From the looks of it the likes of Sammon, hoolahan and others will struggle to even get a chance to impress.

Maybe the FAI need to start looking at bringing back the "B" internationals.Might just open Traps eyes a bit

NOOO... imo The 'B' internationals are an absolute joke. Jesus, these friendly are there for people who wouldnt get a chance in the competetive games. Trap just has a certain mindset about certain players.

anyone know will Trap or Tardelli be in Sligo tonight for the u-21 match? if not, they are a disgrace.

Captain of the U21's and captain in Chelseas youth cup winning side. He has huge potential and will probably go on the have a good career in the Premier League with a mid table side imo.

I agree they are a joke but it seems its the only way these players will get a look in.It sure as hell looks like Trap doesn't watch these fringe players personally

Couldn't agree more, there's endless possibilities.

    Usual team

    Shay Given
John O'Shea - Richard Dunne - Sean St Ledger - Kevin Kilbane
Aidean McGeady - Glenn Whelan - Keith Andrews - Damien Duff

    Robbie Keane - Kevin Doyle

    On the fringes

    Kieran Westwood
Kevin Foley - Darren O'Dea - Ciaran Clark - Stephen Ward
Seamus Coleman - James McCarthy - Darron Gibson - Stephen Hunt

    Shane Long - Jon Walters

    Team 'B'

    David Forde
Stephen Kelly - Paul McShane - Marc Wilson - Damien Delaney
Liam Lawrence - Conor Clifford - Keith Fahey - Keith Treacy

    Leon Best - Simon Cox

    Team 'C'

    Brian Murphy
Eddie Nolan - Shane Duffy - Anthony Gerrard - Greg Cunningham
Robert Brady - Chris McCann - Paul Green - James McClean

    Conor Sammon - Noel Hunt

Players you've probably never heard of but might feature one day XI

    Darren Randolph
Richie Towell - John Egan - Daniel Devine - Enda Stevens
Aaron Doran - Adam Barton - Jeff Hendrick - Jamie Devitt

    Adam Rooney - Joe Mason

May as well throw in the retired/forgotten XI :pac:

    Paddy Kenny
Stephen Carr - Andy O'Brien - Ian Harte - Stephen Reid
Rory Delap - Wes Hoolahan - Stephen McPhail - Andy Reid

    Stephen Ireland

    David Connolly

Was about to say the same thing.

Besides, what's Wes like as a hard tackling ball-winning CDM who offers options from set-pieces? Because that's all Trap wants in there.

    Some good teams there

I think the FAI needs to look at all the players who have declared for us but haven't been included in senior squads let alone been capped. There are a lot of players moving from N Ireland. These players need to more involved in the Irish setup.
If the FAI where to introduce a B team and have it compete on a regular basis it would show players not involved with the "1st team" that they are still in the minds of Trap.

We will start to lose promising young players back to N Ireland

Have to say, it would amaze you how much depth we have when you think about it. If I was given a split second, I'd guess Ireland 'D' would be mostly League One/League Two players but the overwhelming majority are Championship players.

    Joe Murphy
Alan Dunne - Paddy McCarthy - Marcos Painter - Mark Kennedy
Willo Flood - Stephen Quinn - David Norris - Mark Yeates

    Anthony Stokes - Sean Scannell

Correct with the exception of Andrews.

If McCarthy was fit and 100% commited, I reckon Trap would start him. I also think that if Meyler can stay fit and rack up a few Premier League games, that he would also leapfrog Andrews. Trap is on record as saying that he likes Meyler a lot due to his size and physical strength. To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if Andrews never made an appearance for Ireland again.

I hope that's true about McCarthy and andrews but Trap has a history of playing solid no frill players.whelan,Gibson and Andrews fit in with his game plan.Fahey is a good footballer and a lot better than whelan and Andrews but struggles to get into the starting 11

I think with Trap we will always be stuck with limited players who can fit into his rigid tactics

It hard to know what Trap thinks. He has completely thrown me with the Conor Clifford inclusion as he's usually more conservative than the Pope himself. The main reason I'm not sure he'd drop Andrews - even though we'd all love him to - is he has had absolutely ages and countless opportunities to drop Kilbane and still hasn't done it for a competitive game.

Don't be surprised. I have only seen Clifford play once, but he is definitely a Trap player. Gets stuck in with tackles, covers lots of ground and works his socks off when not on the ball. Very commited and looks like he loves being out on the field. He has the hallmarks of being an Irish captain some day from what I can see.

It also helps that he loves shooting from distance :D
