Need advice on DD-WRT router?

    I'd like to sign up for a VPN with overplay.net. I contacted them and they said the best way to use their service was with a router flashed with something called "DD-WRT". They recommended a site called flashrouters.com. I've looked there and their cheapest would cost $90 including shipping. They say it'll be set up for use with overplay and therefore more beginner friendly.

    Is $90 a fair price? I don't really know much about this stuff. I have NGB Ultimate ADSL 12Mb with Eircom. Can anyone advise me? Mods I hope it's OK to ask about this please? :) Thanks.

    That is a perfectly all right price if you know nothing about flashing a Linksys or Buffalo. Save you a fortune in support calls to some poor goms in front line eircom upc or vodafone support who are not allowed to deviate from a script.

    Another OS that may support Overplay VPN standards is Tomato instead of DD-WRT

    I hadn't. I'm cooling a little on the idea since I contacted flashrouters.com. They recommended a dual router set up and I simply don't have the space :( I wanted to replace my Netopia.

    A dual router setup is really the best way to go. I would recommend you go this way too. You can get dd-wrt routers off eBay! I have.

    I got some D-Link DIR 615's with hardware revision D4. The hardware revsion is important. Check http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database and put in the model number for any router.

    There are two firmware images, the one I used is for an initial flash upgrade. It worked for me straight from the routers web based configuration page. Couldn't be simpler. But different routers will be diferent.

    I just followed the first set of instructions at http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge

    The ip of the Netopia is 192.168.1.254 I set the i.p.'s of the second router to "Local IP address = 192.168.1.200" "Subnet mask 255.255.255.0" "Gateway 192.168.1.254" "Local DNS 192.168.1.254"

    On the netopia I set the WiFi channel to 6 and under that put "Auto Channel Setting" to "Off - Default Setting" and used channel 6 on the dd-wrt router. I turned security to off.

    +++++++++++

    If you want a VPN so that you can appear to have a UK ip to watch UK TV you could try "Ex Pat Shield". I found it slow.
