Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of Death in Ireland, with over 52% of all Deaths being cardiovascular related. This is double the overall EU average.

Some heart attacks are sudden and intense - the "movie heart attack", where no one doubts what's happening. Other heart attacks start slowly with mild discomfort. People are unsure what's wrong and then wait too long to get help which could be fatal.

The Greystones CFR have been trained by instructors from the Irish Health Services Executive (HSE) Ambulance Service, to perform CPR, how to use an AED and perform Oxygen therapy. Upon receipt of a 999 or 112 (from mobiles) call we are dispatched simultaneously with the Emergency Ambulance. First Responders are only despatched to cardiac, stroke, choking, collapsed related calls. We arrive within 4 minutes of the call logged to the Ambulance Control centre to administer Oxygen, CPR and use the AED if needed.

We have been in existence in the Greystones Area for roughly 6 years and in that lifetime we've had 100's of call outs.

This is what the First responders do 24/7/365 all time is voluntary and any time given is welcome. Take a look at the article, this isn't to do with "what could happen" this is happening now, but worse if the A&E is closed

Here's to our first responders team, I would love to have the courage to do what you guys do but i simply don't.

A heartfelt thanks for all of the work, training and support you do and provide our community. Im sure without your assistance a lot of people may not be here right now.

    thanks :)

Please don't be put off by saying "I couldn't do that". You'd be amazed at how much you can do in that kind of situation. Putting what skills you have, to use. That's really in a nutshell.

The Greystones CFR are always looking for new people to help us out. It's a 24/7/365 voultary job. Anyone and eveyones help is always greatly received. We don't ask for money...well not yet anyway. But all we do ask for is your time and nothing more :)

According to your link above;"Deputies Billy Timmins, Simon Harris and Andrew Doyle can stop this idiotic life threatening closure but so far they are not getting the message"

    According to this Wicklow People article, Independent TD Stephen Donnelly says;

"If you have a serious injury, go to St. Vincent's. The extra seven or eight minutes involved will radically increase your chances of survival,'

So, leaving aside from the usual FF/FG political backbiting, if one of us needs to jump in the car at midnight tonight and head for a hospital with a very sick family member (I don't think I would be waiting around for an ambulance),
which hospital should we be aiming for?

If it's after 8pm the nearest A&E is St Vincents hospital or Wexford would be the other one heading southbound.

Why would you have to even leave the house when one of the First responders are on call to help the sick person before the ambulance even arrives? When the ambulance does arrive, they will go to one that is on call, it may not even be St Vincents (now that Loughlinstown is removed from the equation) it could be Tallaght. Unfortunately (and I have seen this first hand) if a sick person has a preference to go to a specific hospital, the ambulance crew will bring them to whichever one is available and not their preferred one. That's just the way it is. smile.gif

We are trained to help people no matter how long it takes for the ambulance to arrive. The control centre is based in Thownsend Street, but the ambulances are at the north of the city and in Wicklow town. Greystones is in the middle. That's the whole purpose of the First Responders.

If doing the travelling yourself is what you would feel you'd need to do, that's okay. That's you looking out for that person. Perfectly natural. smile.gif If it's someone having a heart attack, the travel could be halted by you pulling into the side of the road to try and resuscitate someone. It's not a nice scanerio and I hate to bring up the worse case scenario but it's been seen too often and that's the only reason why I mention it.

Like everything in life, it's a judgement call.

What TD Stephen Donnelly said, could make sense for some cases (breaks, sprains, burns, etc), but if it's a stroke or cardiac arrest, he's grossly mistaken! I really cannot stress that enough.

    Hiya!,

Just to let you know there is a Community Exhibition happening in Shoreline Greystones on Wednesday Feb 1st from 11am to 5pm.

This exhibition aims to high-light the local services, groups, clubs and activities to show people what Greystones, Kilcoole and Delgany have to offer and the many ways they might use their time for the benefit of themselves and their community.

The exhibition will feature 5 main strands:

    1. Services to the community – from further education to information on rights and entitlements.

    2. Sports and Recreation – from football clubs to bridge clubs.

    3. Arts and Crafts – from drama groups to church choirs.

    4. Environmental Initiatives – from community gardens to protecting our heritage.

    5. Volunteering Opportunities – from making tea to providing strategic advice.

Of course the Greystones CFRs will have a stand there and I believe the Greystones Camera club will also be there.

    Pop by and say hi.

    Thanks

    Plenty
