Vegan Pregnancy

    Hi all,

I've been vegetarian for 6 years now and have recently moved to being vegan (and can't believe how little I miss cheese!!) Thinking about starting the great baby race some time soon so was wondering if anyone here had any experiences of being vegan and pregnant? If so, how did you find it? Did you go back to vegetarian or meat eater for your pregnancy, or stick with a vegan diet? What challenges did you face (I'm guessing there'd be stick from people about harming your baby and how your baby neeeeeds meat!)

Personally I'm hoping to stick with a vegan diet as I eat quite well taking care to get a good balance, good protein, lots of grains etc. I know from a search on the net that plenty of people have had vegan pregnancies with perfectly normal babies. But just curious about anyone else's experience here. Happy to hear your thoughts/opinions even if pregnancy is not a part of your life!

hi not pregnant, sometime in the future hopefully! im vegan but will def stick to it, theres no way i could go back to either when pregnant.
just do your research, eat properly and you couldnt be healthier then!
you could ask your doctor, they would be able to tell you if you should take extra vitamins etc.
any kids i have will be brought up vegan too, its healthy and at least were not involved with the cruelty etc.
    good luck!!

Just prepare yourself for the amount of doctors, nurses and "friends" who'll tell you that it's not safe to be a pregnant vegan and you "must" eat meat in order for your baby to be healthy.

My sister-in-law is only vegetarian and still got plenty of disapproving clucks and declarations that some kind of meat must be eaten in order to be healthy.

If you do encounter them, just thank them for their opinion and go find a more competent medical professional :D

Thanks for the links Serendipity99. I've found a few already but I'll check out the others.

Seamus, it's gas, my mother in law already says things like, "would you not have a bit of ham because it's Christmas?", I can imagine there'd be more "would you not..." if I was pregnant! But it will be interesting to see what my doctor thinks (she seems pretty open-minded for now).

The girls who wrote Skinny Bitch (great book about been vegan!) also brought out a book called Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven. Haven't read it but it could have some good tips in it!

Congrats on the bundle of joy on the way, you must be so excited!

Thanks ButterflyGirl23, and thanks for the good wishes but no bun in the oven for me yet! Just doing a bit of research as we're considering giving it a go in the next while :)
