Courtyard Hotel Leixlip IFC Rd 1:

Rathangan 1-16 Two Mile House 2-13

Two games in and two draws in the IFC here in Hawkfield.

Disappointing defeat for the hurlers down the road in Newbridge. Positives from the league campaign consolidating 2A status but not a great year on the whole. You'd have to question why so few of the Celbridge players have committed considering they're the best club in the county. Gerry Keegan was always going to be a huge loss this season but loading the team full of outsiders wasn't the answer.

Celbridge looked very comfortable against Towers, if any uncontroversial non tanned referee was in charge it would have been a hammering. Brophy looked reasonably good when he came, he never was the most silky player beforehand but some of his solos looked awkward, he shouldn't take too long to get up to speed hopefully. Towers are weak enough though.

The second game was very entertaining, Rathangan have a forward line as good as any in the IFC and Eoghan Boyle was unstoppable when they got the ball to him. They have Eoin Kennedy and Brian Mullally back playing for them this year and both were good with Mullally kicking some nice scores when he got on the ball. They are defensively very weak though with the exception of Tommy O'Connell who did an ok job on Chris Healy(who still managed to be influential, he may have been at 90% with injury).

For TMH Mark Sherry looked sharp enough though but for a big man is a terrible fielder of the ball, there is not much between him and Boyle in terms of ability I reckon. They look a very young team too, plenty of pace and work rate but they do some sloppy things at times.
Peter Kelly is back for the replay and should make a difference. The draw today was a fair result.

The TMH keeper Didier Cordonnier has the longest kick I've seen in Kildare football in a good while, probably since Mark Herbert.

    :D

David Hughes always stands out for Celbridge when I watch them. If his form keeps up I wouldn't be surprised if he's looked at next winter.

Karl O'Dwyer has Rathangan in decent shape by the looks of things. IFC looks seriously competitive again this year.

How old would he be now? edit: just checked, should be about 23 or 24 and would be a good call to have a look at.

Rathangan are still short in a couple of positions in defence although interestingly enough Declan Brennan was on the line as a maor uisce today. I'm not sure what the story is whether he could be available his year as I think he transferred to a club in Derry when he was studying up there. If they had him at centre back they wouldn't be too far off the top teams.
Today was probably the 1st time in over 20 years that Brian Flood didn't get picked to start a championship game for them too I reckon, he isn't a bad sub to bring on still.

Especially when they all played for their clubs today instead.

That 5 player from outside the county rule was exposed bigtime today.

You can have a cut at those guys if you want but the county board didn't give too much of a fk about its players either. Fixing county football champ on same day. A lad from Maynooth had to play the two games in the space of a few hours.

    He was taking the 45s?

He took one free just inside the 45 but put it well wide with the strong wind at his back. In the warm up beforehand however he was slotting 45s over with ease into the wind.

One kickout in the second half reached Mark Sherry just outside the Rathangan 45, they could have had a goal directly from it but got a point. He is only out of minor too.

Safe to say Eadestown are the relegation favourites this year.

Rathangan beat TMH by 4 points, another good game. 2-15 to 0-17
Stefan Lawlor and Conor Jamieson stepped up for Rathangan who deserved the win. Mark Sherry was missing due to a pre booked holiday and was badly missed as TMH lacked his driving runs through the middle.
Brendan Hickey gave Rathanagan a number of soft frees but they weren't the reason TMH lost, they drift out of games for long periods and can't get away with that against teams who can rack up scores quickly enough. The 2 goals at the start of the second half really killed them off tonight.

Nurney and Ellistown was a poor game, not much to report on.
I expected Nurney to be better, they will be a team most of the winners group won't to unhappy to get. Willie Heffernan's size and strength and Mikey Conway's good distribution are still their main strengths. Their inside forward line moves well and there defence isn't terrible but they are still a very average intermediate team (nothing wrong with that).

Ellistown are really starting to rebuild bringing through a lot of very young players to go along with the senior citizens in the team. Hard to believe how far they have fallen in 10 years, a lot of work to do at underage but even in a disappointing performance the young lads all turned up and did well enough. Conor O'Loughlin was probably the stand out performer for Ellistown, scored a couple of lovely points and carries the ball very well.
Darren Kelly was out injured and his pace was missed.

Brendan Cawley wasn't great but didn't have any big decisions to make.

I didn't stick around for the second game but wasn't surprised by the result, if Ballymore don't implode the JFC should be a procession.

Good win for Ballyteague, Jimmy Hyland should be back for the latter stages of the championship you'd imagine.

Did Fionn Dowling play for Suncroft earlier?

Sallins scoreless and behind by 10 points after 20 minutes! could have won it in the end.
