Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Blow up

actually just saw this long list from Thomas Hawk link

    Cheers,
    Pa

This series, which originally aired on BBC, is worth a watch -

    The Genius of Photography

Big +1s to genius of photography and War Photographer - both brilliant :)

There's also the Masters of photography series, and the brilliant The Colourful Mr Eggleston (a LOT more accessible than the Reiner Holzemer documentary). If you really like war photography there's Looking for an Icon. I really loved that one too.

I have Salgado's The Photographer as Activist but haven't watched it yet (i'd completely forgotten I had it till this thread) and a few other bits that I really need to sit down with.. Actually I just found Ways of Seeing series, the American Photographer series and the Decisive Moments series.. oh dear.. Must look at film collection more often.

Had to stop halfway through the BBC series as it was getting a bit painful having some of these people tell us exactly what the subjects were feeling whilst having their photo taken - could have done without all that imo as it had potential and was interesting without all that bull.

I think its worth a look if you haven't already seen it. I thought it did get a little tiresome as the series progressed, but I think sometimes you need to go back to stuff like that.

I have the Dvd's of it but afterwards it was put over on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/user/GeniusOfPhotography

I must do a second viewing soon myself.

+1 for Genius of Photography & War Photographer, I really must pick up the dvd's.

I'm really looking forward to the Bang Bang Club! Read the book which was great.

Shooting Robert King is also very good. Its about a young kid from america wanting to be a photojournalist and heads over to Sarajevo during the early 90's to cover the war. Watched it a few weeks ago and bought the dvd from play.com the other day going watch it again Monday if it arrives.

Im not sure if I watched the Eggleston one or was he apart of the genius of photography as well?

Ill have to check out the other recommendations in the thread :) I love a good oul documentary!

+1, I love this film. I love the scene where she is photographing the dead girl, and then decides to frame the shot with all the kids outside looking in the window. I've been racking my brains trying to think of other ones, but I keep having flashbacks to being very hungover and stuck in front of the telly watching Bridges of Madison County one Sunday afternoon...hmm.

As an aside, while it's not a film about photographers, the film La Jetee is constructed out of still photographs for the most part, which is a cool concept and also well worth watching.

    +1 for The War Photographer

I had trouble getting it from Amazon due to stock issues, ended up getting it from either play.com or CDWOW had it in stock though, cost about €13

Deadly, lots there :) have to say i found the top one extremely difficult to watch though. "The colourful mr eggleston" is a lot more accessible..

    "Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Impassioned Eye"

I just watched this tonight and very interesting I have to say. On the one hand it shows how much of an artist he really was but on the other, it says that a lot of his "work" is simply coincidence and being able to always be in the right place. However, that's also credited as a great ability. Great documentary anyway.

I won't link to it for legal reasons but if you google the title of the documentary you'll see a russian link near the top where you may or may not be able to watch the whole thing. I have no idea how safe the website is so do it at your own risk or seek out the DvD.

More about the photographer, but this documentary may be of interest for those who like street and fashion photography. Bill Cunningham New York:Link to trailer.

The bang bang club isn't released here in europe yet but if you know where to look you can get a copy of it online ;)

Watched it yesterday and really enjoyed it. The book had more volume in it but the movie just added to the whole story.

Also City of God is another great movie where photography plays a big part of it.

    Watched it yesterday.

Its really good - the guy is a fascinating character, much more interesting than his subject matter for me.
The scenes of him crashing in to the New York taxi on his bike and being threatened by those two girls were gas.
