Has anyone else played Suikoden 2? It is my favorite JPRG so far that I'm on a 2nd playthrough after completing it. I think everyone should play this if you have an interest in JRPGs.

    Highly recommended.

It was the only game to make me get genuinely upset
Nanami's death scene, I know you could save her but still hit me like a brick, especially when they said "oh she's breathing" so I thought she was grand and then Dr. Huan said "I wasn't strong enough" and it just tore me down. She was my favorite character and I had my best equipment on her and everything >.>

Has anyone else here played it and what are your opinions of it?

One of the best games I've ever played, great story and dialogue. Over a hundred characters, and I loved the way the battles turned from rpg to strategy. My favourite character was the tactician, he had some great lines.
I also played 1 and 4. Any others worth getting?

Suikoden 2 is an absolute masterpiece and one of the greatest RPGs ever made. Forget Sephiroth, Luca Blight is a real villain! 'Die Pig!'. It has a simple but fast battle system and for a PS1 RPG it has no battle system load times which is a blessing. The battles get much more tactical for the boss fights. The 2D art is amazing and the soundtrack is wonderful. And then there's the fantastic heartbreaking storyline. It was my favourite game ever for a long time and I still think it's amazing.

As for the rest of the series Suikoden 3 is worth playing but it never got a PAL release. Suikoden 5 is a fantastic game and highly recommended and almost as good as Suikoden 2.

Yeah it got completely ignored on release since it came out close to the release of FFVIII i europe and on the same day in the US. History has shown what is the better game though :)

Yeah I loved the animation, looked so clean and smooth. I love the battle system too especially when you press auto and they just all attack

You know a lot of love has gone into a 2D project when there's loads of animation frames that are only used once in a game. I read somewhere that the opening credit sequence probably has more frames of sprite animation than a snes game and most of them are only used for that scene only. Only other game I've seen so much care and attention paid to the 2D visuals was Mother 3 which so happens to be my current favourite game ever :)

Create a US PSN account and buy some US points online and try to get your hands on the original. Not as good as it's sequel but still brilliant. V is excellent too.
Konami really need to make VI...

I love Suikoden 2. I bought on a whim in August 2000, spent the rest of the summer playing it. Luca Blight will remain etched in any player's memory forever! Did they ever conclude the Yuber/Pesmerga storyline?

I have the first one from the US PSN, but I haven't played it much. If the second one came out to download, I'd feel obliged to finally play through the first so I could finally experience the extra sidequest that you can play if you load a save from the first game in the second!

Yeah jeez, If anyone is reading this thread and has ever likes an RPG but not played Suikoden 2, then you're missing out on a potential "favorite ever game"

Amazing game, so many great characters, Viktor was a proper awesome guy and Luca Blight was an amazing boss fight. There's so many well developed characters no matter who you are you'll probably find some you love

I'm guessing id have to download this onto pc emulator to play this? Was it Ps1 only release?

Suikoden 1 is "on the way" to PSN Europe and it is understood that Suikoden 2 will shortly follow.

but yes, there is currently no way of playing Suikoden 2 unless you have a old PSX and a copy of the game, which could cost you upwards of 200 quid.

I have a copy, the one I bought when it came out first. But it's flawed; the CG sequences break the game, and when they're finished the graphics are all messed.
I need to decipher the pixel squiggles to reach an Inn, Save, then reload the game before I'm away.

Suikoden 2 is coming to PSN? Great news. I'm going to download it from my US account the second it's, inevitably, released in the U.S. first.

The PAL version is one of the times when a game is actually better in the PAL region. There's PAL borders and slow down but the slow down doesn't really matter in this game. However they improved the translation and fixed some of the translation errors and bugs. They also reinstated the vocal tracks that one of the characters sings.

well now don't jump to conclusions. Suikoden 1 is now out on US PSN and "it is understood" that they're working on Suikoden 2.

I though I'd be playing all my favourite PSX RPG by now, but basically all I have is Grandia, and FF 7, 8 & 9

My PS1 copy has been dented, and now the cinematic sequences get miss read and the game reloads after CGS's with botched graphics.

to fix things after a CGS you have to interpret the glitch matrix in front of you, 'walk' to an Inn and guess from all the vague choice-boxes looking things that your saving the game, then, reset and load the game where you saved.

going back to things I like about the game.

I like how FAQ writers can't agree about wither characters are good or not.

if you read any two random guides you'll see a character like, Bob, Killey or Hanna receiving contradictory reviews. One guide will say 'can't think of any reason to use, below average stats, poor performance' etc and another will say 'hidden gem, even better them Victor, above average stats, good front runner, can equip a shield' etc.

where really whats happening is it's a game where they give you a selection of fighters and let you think your picking the strongest, but in fact your really just picking your favorites and dressing them in the best armor and runes and thus they become the best fighters.

I like fighters with high tech and luck instead of strength for more multi-hitting and surer accuracy, just well, because it's cooler; you have shin, the hero, and that Shiro due a round of attacks and they can get almost 5-6 attacks between them and 2-3 critical hits

I also prefer my magicians to be specialist magicians just because I like the idea of extreme high mag stats, at the cost of boring old safe all roundness.

One player mightn't know how anyone can cope without Clive, Luc or Victor in their team, and another might say, Nanami, Rina and Flic are indispensable.

I just picked characters at random and tried to give all the characters a fair shot. There's no real best team to pick. The game is structured so that there's a level cap on each new area so there's no need to grind. Also if you bring a level 1 character into an area with a level 40 cap you can get them to about level 36 where they are useful after about 5 fights. Your main character has instant death attacks so just use them in the first few encounters since they are useless against bosses. I'd always bring a good mix of characters though and always have at the very least one character that can heal.

If I start playing no 2, will I be terribly confused because I didn't play the first one?

I don't wanna jump into 2 not understanding any references made in the story...

There's some nice references and returning characters but you can enjoy it without playing the first game. Would still recommend playing the first game though since it's quite good and very short.
