Well, what are you going to be using it for?
As for Desktop vs Laptop, it REALLY depends on what you are using it for. Desktops can work out as "better value" simply because you can DIY them, while laptops are close to impossible to DIY.0 -

all you need to get is a keyboard and mouse. of course, id spend a little more on a few of the components to get much better performance, but im trying to beat you in price and quality so there you go.
what are you using this for? intergrated graphics from the i5 would be good enough for everyday office/browsing etc, leaving money to improve other parts..
EDIT: some points:
ive a half decent quad core CPU, you have a 'dated' dual core.
your HDD is 640gb while mine only 500gb, but mine would run circles around yours. best 500gb HDD money can buy type thing.
monitor is 1080p, and much nicer than yours, also, its 22" as opposed to 15"
6gb of ram fudges up dual channel; it should be 4gb or 8gb. i settled for 4gb, which is more than enough, though 8gb is not much more.
my GPU destroys yours in games, both are utter muck though, and the 540m you have isnt gonna give you any playable fps by my standards. do you plan to game?
both have blu-ray drives,
i forgot about speakers. steal some?0 -

But would you need a monitor/keyboard ect because that will take out of your budget

You have a very cheap case and ultra cheapie PSU in your build, never ever recommended
Also other very strange choices
The laptop is fine if you aren't into gaming (it'll still run some less graphics intensive games though)0 -

Amazon PSU is the one you're looking for

Buy RAM in a kit

Is that a batmobile heatsink on that graphics card? There's 6770s for a good bit cheaper than that. Alternatively, there's a pretty cheap 6790 going on dabs (see bargain alerts thread). HWV has just given up again so I can't see the alternatives at the moment.0
