How to protect the sides of an external chimney breast

Looking for some advice on what to do.We have an external chimney breast & are having some problems in wet weather. The water is running down the sides & hitting the plaster on the downslope on both sides. There is no protective cover over the plaster. I have seen on other houses they have lead flashing under the plaster & the sloped area is slated.

Can this be done even if there isn't a recess for the lead?
    Have we other options?

    Any assistance would be appreciated.

You can cut into the render to add lead flashing if you want to, but you're better off getting a professional to do it for you......
