Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Carbon frame and turbo

    Has anyone any experience of using a carbon frame bike on a turbo trainer? does it do the bike any damage?

    It wouldn't bother me, but if you're paranoid check with the manufacturer.

    When I got my turbo trainer I worried about the same thing. I did ask around quite a bit before buying and everyone I asked said not to worry.

    My bike has titanium inserts in the fork and the rear dropouts which look weak. I was pretty worried about the rear dropouts and how they would handle the stress as the bike is clamped at these points. I used the bike on the trainer quite a bit during the winter with no problems at all.

    I still wouldn't go off on a mad out of the saddle sprint but for regular cycling on the turbo I really wouldn't worry about it.

    How could it do any damage?

    The frame is held at a single fixed point and noticeably flexes around that point, which means that the stresses on the frame are significantly different than seen on the road. So it is a perfectly reasonable question.

    OP, loads of people do this, with no issues. Although it takes a while before you don't think about it.

    I have heard it's a bit of a no-no. If you have the luxury of an alloy training hack I would use that.

    dunno why yet, but I couldn't change my front derailleur on my carbon bike in the turbo during the week for some reason. worked fine when I took it out. can't explain it, can anyone else?

    I found this too, the bike would change to the big ring no problem out on the road but on the turbo it would struggle a bit. I wouldn't have thought it'd be only a problem for Carbon frame bike though.

    I was thinking the reason must be that the vibration of the road must make it easier for the chain to get a purchase on the big ring by making the chain move about a bit. Whereas on the trainer your only relying on the derailleur cage to push the chain over until a tooth catches the chain, I think vibration from the road must help this happen more easily.

    I put a bit more tension on the front derailleur cable for the turbo session and it was fine.
