Removing varnish with vodka??

I recently bought a second hand light oak table that has been badly varnished with a thin coat which is peeling in spots. Seeing as I now have a day off, I want to start stripping it but I have no denatured alcohol and no way to get to a DIY shop. I do, however, have a half bottle of vodka that I'd be willing to sacrifice for the cause..... Will this work or will it just be a waste of the blessed stuff?

Vodka or any alcohol will not remove a solvent based finish like most varnishes (polyurethane) or cellulose lacquers etc. Best bet is some proprietary varnish stripper followed by sandpaper.
