Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hey all.

Ive recently started to relive my youth through a Master System and a NES.
Im looking for ideas of classic games that Defined the 8 Bit era. Now i know that you can point at the usual suspects so id like to know of rare hidden gems aswell. Any type of game RPG, Sports, Action, Puzzle ect
At the minute i cant put down Zillion or Time Soldiers for the SMS. And of course Zelda on NES.

    Any suggestions?

Your in the right place anyways! Bubble Bobble on the NES is worth a look, love that game, ghost and goblins too. dont have a Master system myself, but sonic is on that isnt it?

The Alex Kidd games are great for a bit of nostalgia :)

Also, After Burner and Altered Beast deserve a mention!

EDIT - Loved Double Dragon too!

Sonic 2 on the MS was great. I played it mostly on the gamegear though, and the first boss had me tearing my hair out.

Look at the difference between the gamegear first boss

    and the MS first boss

    Nightmare

worth a look on the SMS are
    Master of darkness (segas castlevania!)
R-type (unless you've a pc engine I reckon this is the best version around)
    Gauntlet
    the Alex Kidd games
    Pyscho Fox
    Mission Impossible
    Space Invaders 90
    Montezuma's REvenge
more when I get a chance

Dragon Crystal is a great game on the SMS, plus Legend of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse and The New Zealand Story

I had a Master System with about 30 games. All of the following were good from what I can recall.

    Alex Kidd In Miracle World.
    Afterburner.
    Enduro Racer.
    Alien Storm.
    Mickey Mouse: Castle of Illusion
    Cool Spot.
    Ghouls & Ghosts.
    Hang-on.
    Golden Axe.
    Vigilante.
    Micro Machines.
    Sonic I and II.
    Paperboy.

Can't think of anymore for the moment..

Enduro Racer is great , although its a completely different game to the arcade (it's more like excite bike I guess)

Best nes game Super Mario Bros 3

On the Master System id go for R-Type

For something a little newer try and play all the Ace Attorney Series from the start

And of course the greatest game of all time Boulder Dash

BD1/2 is best on the C64
BD3 Is best on the Speccy

Then play all 400 fan versions and the Nes and gameboy conversions:D

    Boulderdash on the spectrum? Blasphemy!!
I reckon the Atari 800 version is probably the best one to go with.
(since its actually coded on that machine and the c64 one is technically a conversion ;))
Boulderdash construction kit is good craic as well
Given that he's on about NES and SMS games the NES is probably the only option.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Phantasy Star on the Master System. That game is way ahead of it's time.

On the NES you should go for these games:

    Megaman 2 and 3
    Biomiracle Bokutte Upa
    Ufouria
    Castlevania
Simons Quest (a faq is essential)
    Castlevania 3
    Bionic Commando
    Otocky
    Darkwing Duck
    Duck Tales 1 and 2
    Rescue Rangers 1 and 2
    Kirbys Adventure
    Little Nemo
    Little Samson
    Clash at Demonhead
    Shatterhand
    Vice Project Doom
    Batman
    River City Ransom
    Punch out
    Magic of Scheherazade
Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom
    Mother
    Crystalis
    Dragon Warrior 1-4
Wai Wai World 1 and 2
    Metal Storm
    GI Joe
    Ninja Gaiden 1-3
    Shadow of the Ninja
    Rygar
    Contra
    Super Contra
    Crisis Force
    Moon Crystal

Also whatever you do, do not play the NES versions of the two metal gear games. They are absolutely horrendous. Play the MSX metal gear games instead.

Faxanadu for NES is a must have,Snake Rattle n Roll, Digger T Rock, Marble Madness are all great too.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 3,184 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dr Bob

The Nes version of Maniac Mansion was pretty good.
Splatterhouse wanpaku graffiti is great, but jap only and its pretty unlikely you'll get a copy.
I cant believe I didn't mention it but the Wonderboy games are must buys on the master system ..especially III the dragons trap

You kinda remind me of one of those fundamentalist christian types who bring Jebus into every conversation...

Hmm, yes, the economy and how it's effected by the recent rising tide of international food prices, it's a bit like Boulderdash really...... ;)

Have you even played Boulder Dash 3 on the Speccy

I will agree that 1 and 2 were chite on the speccy but 3 is the moment the speccy shines

Without doubt it is the best version better graphics and feels so much different from the c64 version

Also i played the Atari version and tbh i stand by what i said

C64 is the better version hands down conversion or not

Also the Construction kit is rubbish and bug ridden even Peter Liepa agrees

Try the Crazy light construction kit very easy to use and i have built a few of my own caves with it

On the First day God created Rockford
On the Second day he created Unbreakable Boundaries
On the Third day he created a growing force that may never exceed 200 spaces
On the Forth day he created Fireflies that explode our hero
On the Fifth day he created Butterflies that create diamonds for our hero
On the Sixth day he created the exit which leads to a never ending loop
On the Seventh day he rested having created perfection:D

    Thanks for the tips guys.
I managed to get my hands on copies of R-Type, Phantasy Star and Enduro Racer to go with my copies of Wonderboy, Double Dragon, Zillion, Secrect Commando and Time Soldiers i already had.
I forgot how difficult R-Type is and how wicked Enduro Racer is. Altho i had Enduro Racer finished in 10 minutes. Im gonna say something controversial here im not a fan of Phantasy Star.
Havnt even looked at my NES.

I loved Enduro Racer. It was one of the first games I played where you could upgrade stuff for money.

I used to love that on the Spectrum, there was an excellent version of Enduro Racer on it.
The version of Super Hang-On was pretty good on the Speccy as well.

The Speccy version used the arcade original as a basis, while the Master System used the isometric viewpoint.

Solomon's Key and Battle of Olympus on the NES are pretty sweet.

Enduro Racer is one of my fondest games as a kid. I used to do crazy speed runs at it for hours at a time! It wasn't even that big a game
