The market area in Drogheda - Old picture.

I managed to obtain an original copy of the photograph below.
Its of the market area in Drogheda as photographed and was placed in a book of pictures that was taken around Ireland at the time and eventually published.
I thought some would like to see it. Not sure when the actual picture was taken exactly but the clothing and equipment might provide a clue to the rough era.

Those could quite easily be fake spuds too, if it was shot during famine times

Wow the facebook ones of Dyer St. take me back , mid - late 90's??? Or was it later than that even? Around the time they did the heymarket bridge etc early 00's ?

Must have been down that street 100's of times as a kid but if you asked me to remember what it looked like back then I'd have struggled to remember them having widened it. I now remember that street being in particularly bad order and many many of the buildings being fit for knocking.

Love to see more from around that time.

Wow st. peters looks so much better with its gates and railings, am I right in thinking they only went in the late 70's / early 80's? Remember there used to be a shrine to our lady on the left on the former AIB side?

Laurence St buildings look like new in that B&W Shot :eek:

The watermarks could be a little more discrete i think in some there Biggins , ruins the shot of Dominic's bridge

EDit: Was just showing these to my parents, they have a request for shots of john st / mary st area from the the 60's/70's if anyone has any please

They were definitely gone by 1977, so it was sometime before that.

We always figured their removal was a post-Vatican II thing, but perhaps the explanation was more mundane.

Appologies about the degree of watermarks, the software I use presently don't give much options.
