Amy Winehouse didnt have mass appeal. She wasnt influencial in anyway and didnt really represent anything...at all. I'm not a fan of joplain or Kurt but the legacy they left on music and people was evident. 'Try to make me go to rehab', 'I go back to him', 'come on over valerie', its pretty tame, usual stuff, nothing exciting or provocative really.

They're love songs. Just because she didn't write about changing the world, doesn't mean that she hasn't been influential. As a vocalist alone, I think her influence has been pretty evident in the last couple of years alone (Adele and Duffy immediately spring to mind, nevermind Lady Gaga). What she represented was singing with a bit of soul, which is sorely missed in music these days. I didn't realise that in order to be a good musician you had to be writing music about changing the world. In my mind, a good musician is someone who sings and writes with a bit of meaning, like Cobain did (even though I don't really like him), and Joplin. In fact, some of Joplin's best performances were of songs that she didn't even write herself (Ball and Chain, Me and Bobby McGee, Summertime), and she never wrote or sang about what you would consider 'exciting or provocative' (although I would consider it exciting). Billie Holiday sang love songs (most of which were written for her) and she is the single most influential female singer of all time. There's a difference between being a technically good singer and being a great singer who can interpret songs and make them their own. Billie Holiday had it, Janis Joplin had it, and Amy Winehouse had it. You don't have to be singing about changing the world, and influencing the lives of impressionable teenagers to be a great musician. People have been singing about love, if that's what you consider 'tame' and 'the usual stuff' forever, and it will never lose it's mass appeal. The difference is, some people sing about it with feeling while others don't. Amy Winehouse did, I don't see what's so hard to understand about people liking her music and appreciating her talent. It's not as though she was void of talent. She was a brilliant singer.

She was a creation of a record company who spotted a gap in the market for a mainly female, slightly older audience who didn't really like rock, dance or hip-hop but still felt they were above listening to the manufactured pop in the charts. Her CV reads like almost any x-factor karaoke singer:
She later attended The Mount School, Mill Hill, the BRIT School in Selhurst, Croydon,
Winehouse signed to Simon Fuller's 19 Management in 2002.

Dismissing her on the basis of that is ludicrous. Just because someone went to a performing arts school doesn't make them talentless. She wrote her own material, anyone can hear that she had a great voice. Comparing her to anyone from X-Factor is laughable, considering she had more talent in her little finger than anyone who ever appeared on that show. Anyone who can't hear that she had talent either has never properly listened to any of her music, and/or has no idea what a talented singer sounds like. As an avid fan of soul and the blues, I don't doubt for a second that she had one of the best voices I've heard singing that genre of music.

I don't know how people can dismiss her talent. I don't like Kurt Cobain - I think he was a whiny cliché of rock music - and I've never really enjoyed Nirvana, but I'd never for a second argue his talent.

People should be more grateful that there are still a lot of talented musicians out there for future generations to enjoy rather than complaining about them.
