Working over 14 hour days all week and getting crucified on taxes which then is pumped into paying for street cleaners, extra gardaí, increased A&E activity in the hospital and that stupid race track that's only used twice a year.

Of course pro's outweigh the cons in that the restaraunteers and publicans are making money which can then go back to paying off some of the debt they owe on bad property investments (or more likely to an off-shore account for when they go bust)

That's my rant. Axe to grind.

Haven't really been around to buy anything so couldn't tell you of services or goods being a rip off. Also the Radisson is always a rip off. During Non-Race Week I was charged 5.90 for a bottle of beer

Agree with above statement. Most people helping out and doing two jobs this week. Long hours listening to people complain about prices we haven't set- we just sweat and serve behind the counter. Only to get wages that are missing nearly two days of your work in tax. Enjoy the races- I wish I could

Sorry Arty, mine is misleading. My long days aren't in the service industry. I feel for you more than for myself, I worked in service for 11 years. I'm just working long hours due to deadlines and lack of resources due to everyone booking off race week :(

    Yes - Radisson = Rip-off.

I was charged 3.20 for a dash of pineapple juice from a Dawn carton during a non-race week.

Hate race week, everywhere packed full of locked racegoers, traffic is ridiculous and the aforementioned rip-offs that go on.

    Is today ladies day?
If some of those dresses got any shorter they'd be collars.
Also I did not see any ladies.

You'll see them later "pissing" in the streets, seriously.

I keep wanting to say "Lovely underwear you've got, pity you can't afford a dress to go over it" - but restrain myself in a major act of self-preservation!

On a plus side, McSwiggan's were still doing a lunch menu this week for €5.95 and it was ample. Fair play to them and it is one reason why our office support them on a regular basis as regards lunch and will continue to do so.

sit back and relax, its not that bad, theres people that come other times of the year besides race week because of the popularity Galway has gained

    Deep breaths all round.

Prices go up by a mile and we say nothing so can't see that changing anytime soon. I'm one of those that unfortunately (I know) don't always complain, unless it's bad service 'attitude', that does get my wick and I will always complain about that. If prices go up yet the service is top notch then I can go along with it, just my own thing.

As for ladies day, I see it as nothing more as a 'look at me look at me day' that seems to be coupled with a 'f*ck you to anyone' attitude. Pure utter nonsense but it isn't everyone. Loads of my female mates and my sis and inlaws enjoy dressing up and enjoying it but thankfully they aren't in the bad attitude bracket. The same goes for the clowns that think wearing a suit allows you to act like a maggot. Basic manners goes a long way.

I'm grumpy anyway and haven't been there since I was 16, much much prefer a day out at Ballinrobe races (if the weather is nice) where you can have a great time out without the negative things that go with the Galway races.

Best of luck to anyone going to the races, word of advice, don't follow tips.

Crazy, a man shouldn't be penalised for one week a year. The downfalls of PAYE.

    And he isn't.

It has to be charged that way in case you keep earning that much for every other week.

But if you don't, and if it's the same job, the "extra" tax will be evened out over the next few weeks (or months, if you don't work a lot) - ie you will pay less tax then to make up for paying 42% now.

It's a different job, same craic except you need to make sure you've told Revenue about it, and told them that it's now finished.

Worst case, you ask for a P21 early next year.

Galway is a place to avoid from a consumer point of view during the Summer months.
“I would now avoid Galway during July and early August because between the Galway Races and the Arts Festival, prices tend to go through the roof,” said Philip Nolan who was named the Travel Writer of the Year recently.
