Best option would be to install a Linux distro may be one aimed at children. They will be able to browse the internet, use email, play music and videos and a few children's games as well as a lot of educational software aimed at children.

Look in the Unix/Linux forum under operating systems for suggestions on child friendly distros.

Does your computer have a recovery partition that you can use to reinstall windows?

How do you know it's "riddled"?
Did you get a discs with it?
Would it be ok to install another operating system and get rid of Windows?

it will not allow anti virus to run, when trying to use them first off the mouse is on a piece of elastic, then when i down load one i get a dialouge box tells me the system does not allow the instalation of such files, it is an old dell lattitude with a 127 stick and a 10 gig hard drive, the grand kids are only 4 so there is no requirement for any thing better.

In that case I agree with FSL, download and burn a CD with Ubuntu and just overwrite Windows.

    http://www.edubuntu.org/ is good for kids

Mind I haven't used this myself so can't say if you will run into snags but the Linux forum will be able to help.

Well you could put almost any operating system you want on a pen/flash drive and in BIOS settings boot from the USB and install.

Also if you want to try and repair the system you could use hiren boot on your flash drive but you must format the flash/pen drive to fat32.

    step by step here
