Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

No.461 will be leaving Whitehead for Dublin on Sunday. Leaving at 10:35 if you want to get out and take a few pictures.

Are there any planned movements prior to Saturday?

Not that I am aware of.

Not that I am aware of.

There will have to be. 461 decided she liked Dundalk so much that she stopped working there today :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 552 ✭✭✭Salmon Leap

Have they managed to get her going again?

    Hot off the presses...

Locomotive No.461 was on its way light engine to Dublin on Sunday when, during a routine servicing stop at Dundalk, it was found that the left big end was carrying a bit of heat.

Rather than proceed, the locomotive was stabled there while the big end was dismantled and examined. No serious damage was found and it is hoped that the locomotive can proceed soon to Dublin.

Meanwhile, the plan is for No.186 to be worked light to Dublin later in the week for the planned Maynooth Shuttles on Saturday 3rd March.

Seems the RPSI are not having much luck with 461. THanks for the update....

Nothing too unusual when a loco is returning to service after a long lay off. I seem to remember 461 suffering lots of little niggles during her initial running in period in 1990 too.

The RPSI have changed the motive power on their website for Saturday's trips from 461 to 186 now.

Shame not to see 461, but 186 in full flight is still a superb sight to see!

Any steam train is better than no steam train.:D
Hopefully it shouldn’t be to long before 461 is back in service.

  • Registered Users Posts: 552 ✭✭✭Salmon Leap

Sorry to be a pain on this thread, but has anyone any idea of what times the shuttles will depart Maynooth on the return legs?

Hopefully it shouldn’t be to long before 461 is back in service.

Due into Dublin tomorrow; departing Dundalk at 12:00 and Connolly for 14:15.

From there it will go on a test run with Cravens from Connolly (14:35) to Enfield, arriving 16:13 and departing again (16:48) to Connolly (18:28) for driver training and running in.

This run is not carrying passengers at all while the times are subject to change

THanks for that, Losty! Going to try to get some shots of her around Leixlip.

Great spot, the long straight stretch up to the station from the bridge.

I'm thinking of going to there too, or Pikes Bridge.

Did she run today? Went up to Confey around 15.00 for a look but no sign of her.

Yep. She was late getting in from Dundalk so only took the Cravens to Maynooth rather than Enfield. She followed the 15:05 Sligo from Connolly so you probably missed her by half an hour or so.

  • Registered Users Posts: 552 ✭✭✭Salmon Leap

Was at Pikes Bridge, gave up after almost an hour. Just got back into the car when she appeared!!!! Went to Maynooth station and got some shots.

She looks great in the green. Sound well too!!!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,247 ✭✭✭✭Losty Dublin

Seems that a LE diesel failed in front of 461 which held her up, as well as the mid morning train from Belfast. In the end, I was told that she only ran a short trip to Maynooth and back to try and make up some of the time. With a long trip to Wexford coming up in 3 weeks time, there might just be one or two test runs sneaked in to help driver training so keep the eyes and ears peeled for word.

  • Registered Users Posts: 552 ✭✭✭Salmon Leap

Doubt they could have managed a quicker turnaround than yesterday in Maynooth. Impressive!

    Whats a LE deisel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,247 ✭✭✭✭Losty Dublin

    Whats a LE deisel?

LE is light engine; it's the term for a locomotive moving that's not hauling a train.

That's the Puffing Billy sign and yes, it's a standard one that's used at many accommodation or private crossing points.

With the Garret Fitzgerald memorial train running on Saturday, is the turntable in Mullingar still operational or will 461 have to run bunker-first back to Dublin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,247 ✭✭✭✭Losty Dublin

The turntable there still works; it turned 186 last year on a tour.

  • Registered Users Posts: 552 ✭✭✭Salmon Leap

    Thanks Losty.

One more question: do you know if/where she is scheduled to stop for water on the outbound and inbound trips?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,247 ✭✭✭✭Losty Dublin

    Thanks Losty.

One more question: do you know if/where she is scheduled to stop for water on the outbound and inbound trips?

I didn't see paths yet but I'm guessing Maynooth around 10:10AM, Mullingar around midday and onto Longford; there was tickets on sale for local shuttles. If 461 is to be turned, it will be done later in the day.

A word of warning to anybody popping down; the turntable can't be seen from the public platform on the station. Unless Irish Rail allow it on the day, it will not be possible to see 461 being turned. That said, uou will be more than welcome to pop down to the station to see the train

Losty, sorry to be a pain, but according to the RPSI she is leaving Dublin @ 11:30am. So 12:10 @ Maynooth?

Is the turntable over by the Loco shed at Connolly not used anymore? I noticed the photo below on the RPSI's website of 461 being turned on the small turntable adjacent to Platform 7. It's a tight squeeze!

    Ohh wow.
I would have liked to have seen that. It is a small turntable, usually one of the track maintenance machines are on it.

Due to Technical difficulty’s with locomotive 186 the MGWR Shuttles on Sunday have been cancelled.

Passengers should contact their ticket provider for a refund

The RPSI apologises for the unavoidably short notice of this announcement.

Whilst the Diesel enthusiasts would be in raptures to get a run behind an 071,the core market of families with kids would be very disappointed with no steam engine up top. An orange 071 would mean little to them tbh.

would they even know the difference? any very smoky 071s? put it at the top, they won't notice the difference.

no their not, but unless these people who are going on the trips have a little interest or a little knowledge, i can't see why they would care apart from the simple (i was promised something and i didn't get it) i accept i'm probably missing the point but i realy don't think the average person cares. i've often heard people refering to a railcar as (the dart) okay its not like for like but it shows how much the average person knows.
