I could be wrong but I think the reason the shale stopped was because they had nothing to haul it when the 141s were withdrawn.

Last shale was 18 December 2009, operated by 171. In late March 2010 the 141/181 were withdrawn until further notice however they remained on pilot duties in Inchicore. In may 2010 171 was moved to Connolly for pilot duties after a modification to its brake equipment.

    Edit: From the ITG website
Originally numbered B141 – B177. The last example of this class was taken out of service in October 2011

Last shale was 18 December 2009, operated by 171.

Irish Cement were the customer who used the trains. They stopped using rail due to a slack off in their business and less need for shale supplies. The plant let a rake of staff go last year so don't be expecting this flow to return.

It says 250 on the side of it ;-)

Still, at least Spain has a heap of infrastructure for its boom.

Few pictures from midleton today and the FIRST one is a interesting one for me. There are three more on a siding near where the water tank is before the bridge and that siding has been tidied up and looks like new ballast and the rails look new which is interesting. There is also the thing that went behind the loco from the Ammonia trains is still in the yard.

Took this picture today in Cobh. I guessed it was the remains of a ground frame for the loop but looking at the track layout I looks in the wrong place.

That is correct. Until a few years ago the station was at the heritage centre itself so the relevant points etc were in different locations. When the station and track was moved up, the turn outs and points to release locomotives were moved as well. Some years ago Cobh signal cabin was closed and replaced with a ground frame controlled by an Annet's lock on the ETS staff; this stayed in place until resignalling 2 years ago.

A picture of the siding on the lower glanmire road side of the station. There is actually four there not three so that makes a total of five in kent station.

If this is an O'Dea photograph, are there any issues with posting it on this forum? I'm thinking copyright and the like.

It certainly is, but could be even nicer if CIE/IE would remove the graffiti which is starting to destroy the beautiful retaining walls and bridges between Dalkey and Killiney. A few traces of graffiti can be seen in your images.

    Evening folks,

A day around the Portarlington area. Highlights include 22055 working the annual Knock Special, 209 on the 1600 Heuston - Mallow and 22027 covering for a unavailable 6ICR set on the 1340 Tralee - Heuston.

Because its the Waterford and Lismore Diocese Pilgrimage to Knock. The train serves Carrick-on-Suir, Clonmel and Cahir. Obviously none of these towns, or the Diocese would be served if the train ran via Kildare!

It would have traveled via the WRC in the old days and would have been a darn sight bigger too. I didn't even realise there was any specials still operating for Knock these days - can't be many?

It was a darn sight bigger up to the end of MKIII's when 8 or 9 pce trains were the norm. Introduce a modern train and then platform regulations kick in :(, but saying that it kinda goes hand in hand with modern anti Catholic Ireland.

I did the 2005 trip with the MKIII's, being one of the modern generation I went to Ballina instead of Knock during the layover in Claremorris...much more fun! http://smu.gs/16JagS8
