    Morning all,

Pictures from Thursday include 073 working the Weedspray Train to Portlaoise, 22023 at Portarlington and Heuston, along with 22001. Finally, a long overdue trip to former haunts on the LUAS Green Line.

Think it may have been the original goods depot when the station was on Penrose Quay. The goods depot proper, or what used to be it until relatively recently, was contained in the building beyond.

The 'Goods Depot' is the building in the distance http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,568358,572183,7,9 - but I imagine both had goods usage. This was adjacent to the main station, known as Cork (Penrose Quay) building: http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,568303,572160,7,9 building immediately after the tunnel was built - before that it was at Blackpool - I presume here: http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,567672,574013,7,9

The current main station building opened in 1893.

Thought you folks might be interested in this view of "the Lost Railway of Maine". These locomotives are miles into the woods from the nearest gravel road.

226 has been coming together for years and thanks to a real crusader in Carrick! Next time you see him, say hello from the rebel in the Canary Islands. He should know what you mean.

i'm full of admiration for the way the boys there have stuck to it with 226, and G616 for that matter, hopefully both will run in the not too distant future.... I hope my efforts will help them along the way just a little.

I have been. It's starting to look disturbing like a fully functional locomotive.

As part of the Balbriggan Festival, the RPSI sent 461 and Cravens down the GNR mainline to run two local trains. While the out run from Dublin was somewhat sparse on passengers, the local shuttles were packed with over 600 passengers, all eager for a dose of steam haulage. And with 461 in fine steam, some excellent timings were made on the day, no mean feat given the notoriously gradients en route.

GM 226 lifted the Cravens prior to 461's departure for Balbriggan Here she sits in Connolly.

226 seems to be the Connolly pilot shunter this week. Spotted it shunting failed 231 around Connolly on Thursday afternoon and today it's shunting Cravens. Strange having a non Enterprise equipped 201 hanging around Connolly for so long.

Kudos to 461, it's putting on some great performances this year. Respect to the lads at Whitehead for their hard work in getting it to this condition.

Just spent last few minutes looking at fascinating photos of trains and locomotives of various eras uploaded on the recently created New South Wales Photographic Collection on Flickr (similar to the NLI's site).

Might be of interest for those who look outside of Irish railway history. A quick glance notices the similarity of the British/Irish locomotive design supplied to such regions. Almost mistook this to be of DSER origin. :)

A Beyer Peacock product? Wouldn't look too much out of place on the West Cork either.

Always wondered why many colonial locos (not this particular one tho) got nice things like electric lighting and mechanical stokers when miserable oil lamps and backbreaking labour were par for the course back 'Home' until the end of steam.

Because the Irish trains never got replaced / updated.

I wasn't referring to Ireland, which was 20 years or so behind the uk practice anyway.

British steam locos up to the demise of steam almost all of them had oil headlights and manual firing. Surprising in view of what they sent out to the colonies and elsewhere was generally to a higher spec. Maybe something to do with the cultures of the loco dept in pre-Grouping companies, eg the Midland 'small engine' policy, handicapping loco development well into LMS days.

Barring the whole total removal of steam from CIE earlier than the UK (twice)...

Not sure if it will be opened but work still going on there to the station building which was in a poor state but looking a lot better now. The new ticket barriers at Newbridge and Kildare are in use afaik.

The building in the foreground was a carriage shed.
