A railway slang term used to describe a vehicle or set, which has been stopped for a period of time and has parts taken off it to keep sister units in service. A common occurrence the world over.

    Evening all,

There was another Red Line Tram failure in Dublin City Centre on Thursday 28th November. "The Doctor" was on hand at St. Steevens Lane, near Heuston Station to photograph 3004 being pushed by 3016 back to the Red Cow Depot.

A few pictures from the disconnected spur at Kilmastulla shale quarry in Tipp (no rolling stock to be seen unfortunately):

Looking down the track. A very tall platform for tipping the shale into carts. It doesn't look like there would be much clearance between the train carts and the wall.

Looking back from the end of the platform.

There was just one siding from what I could see. This section of the line has wooden sleepers before changing to concrete a short distance before it would have connected with the mainline.

Indeed LOL locomotive 125 was 1 of the longest Christmas trees at Inchicore, I think 216 & 225 are Christmas trees, hmmm there was a danger that 087 might have become a Christmas tree, thankfully not yet, 230 will definitely become a Christmas tree, if it hasn't already, 2609 was probably the newest Christmas tree at Inchicore, but then it became a hybrid DMU paired up with 2716, serveral Metrovicks became Christmas trees 004 006 024 028 037 040 etc etc to keep the best going, a whole thread could be devoted to CHRISTMAS TREES:cool:

They are not really christmas trees though, the were just made redundant with no plan to return them to service unless the freight sector took off. But in saying that they did take the bogies off 210 and gave them to 223 while putting 223's worn out bogies back on 210 and not even bothering to reconnect it's brakes.

At least one is missing an engine and generator anyway.

They are Christmas trees;), yes made redundant in their own right, but then become Christmas trees for other locos, 218? I think now has the engine out of 211. When loco 191 was involved in the Clonsilla incident in August 1991 was ''stored'', serveral years later when it was finally scrapped it was nothing but a shell, stripped of all its parts, anything of use was used, twas a Christmas tree for other locos, just like all the Metrovicks before it.
They may not be able to use the electrics out of 230, because of fire damage, but I'm sure there will be other useful parts.
Former Christmas trees at the sound barrier 4th March 1989.

ps a very nice headlight on 044, which would fit nicely on another Aclass, I think when I passed by a few months later, the headlight was missing..........

What was the craic with that test train heading to Belfast? Are they seeing how those ICRs take the line?

Doing line clearance for when they have to run North and driver route training. They ran set 2 up there last year and now set 4 as a 4 car. Only sets 1-6 have TPWS fitted in the cabs. Similar to NIR C3Ks, sets 1-6 have CAWS installed in the cab so when you see a C3K set filling in for the Enterprise or doing a GAA/Rugby special it's always sets 1-6 doing it.

Is an 071 always scheduled to take the last train of the day instead of 461, and is that communicated to the passengers? Or was it a once-off?

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,174 ✭✭✭✭Captain Chaos

That's twice in one week 074 failed to start up. 088 had to jump start it last week before 073 had to do the same. Time to call her in for her overhaul.

There were 3 trips each Saturday and 2 on Sundays. The third trip on Saturday was always scheduled to be a diesel and this was put on the booking form
