Completly forgot about the Relay Train to Portlaoise today. :(

Sunday has pictures from Kilbride Bridge, near Portarlington & Ballybrophy, while Monday sees 22015 and single car 22534 at Laois Train Care Depot.

    Good evening all,

Tuesday 25th March was a rather interesting day on the Dublin - Cork line with several unusual movements operating.

    Highlights include:
    - 2803 + 2804 hauling 2719 + 2721 1100 Limerick - Inchicore for further storage. This follows on from three 2700 Class transfers from Limerick to Cork over the last number of weeks.
    - Track Recording Car 700 operating 0950 Mallow - Kildare.
    - 088 1500 Limerick - Portlaoise PWD transfer which consisted of Rail Truck + Sperry Wagon + 11 Flats.
    - 22015 on a 1355 Laois Depot - Mallow & 1555 Mallow - Heuston Trial.

Plus the usual scheduled MKIV and 22000 Class services.

    Pictures begin at http://smu.gs/1pxscEr

    Enjoy,
    The Wanderer.

anyone know if the 2700s are ever started up? and are they stored outside to rot or are they protected from the elements?

Doubt it, I'd say IR want the 2700s gone to save money. They are not a common unit like the 26s and 28s are. Same with the 8200 DARTs, odd ball units. They have been withdrawn from sale along with 8200s, no one wanted them so they are waiting to be scrapped.

If I'm correct, the road and dock (and the college) are named after Queen Alexandra, not the Emperor or the city.

29020 ran into trouble on the tramway and decided it didn't want to play anymore. One North Wall - Tara Mines cancelled and IWT late loading.

A quick visit to Portarlington Station to view 2813 + 2814 hauling stored 2707 + 2708 from Limerick to Inchicore.

113 has been working a night ballast train between Derry and Coleraine this week. She rumbled over the Bann bridge at 2am on Monday 24th and I made my way to the station for a photo of the run round...

Instead of rebuilding an old rail alignment that runs through a lough that's prone to flooding, maybe it would have been better to make a new route running closer to Shannon Airport / Newmarket?

They might even have picked up some extra passengers along the way? :D

In fairness to Irish Rail, this part of the line is on the Limerick-Ennis section.

Not been past Limerick myself, but it's not exactly a straight route from Sixmilebridge to Ennis, according to Google Maps.

How often does that lough flood, I seem to remember it flooding closing the line more that once over the years?

I thought IE rebuilt parts of Ennis - Limerick when they increased services in the '90's?

I don't remember to many closures because of flooding and they were never as long as this one.

This Irish Examiner article sums up the situation http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/opw-denies-responsibility-for-flooded-rail-line-258398.html

The line has flooded in recent times in 2008 and 2009 despite the line being raised by 60 cm in 2003. Iarnród Eireann feel that the OPW are ultimately to blame for the line flooding at Ballycar because they increased the catchment of the Lough when they were carrying out the drainage works programme in the late 1920s. The line had apparently not flooded before the catchment of the Lough was increased. The OPW don't believe the flooding has anything to do with the drainage works.

Here's a photo of another small flooded section on the line just up(stream) from Ballycar Lough heading for Ennis:
