Finbarr, your photos of 461 at Glasnevin Jn are superb.
Did you take your photos from the insular part (st paul's) of the cemetery?

    Evening folks,

The main event today was a 1296 tonnes trial train from Heuston to Sallins and back again, utilising 16 Autoballaster Wagons + a dead 201 Class on the rear. The test is part of a study into increasing the maximum length and weight of freight trains from 18 bogies (36 TEU's) to 27 bogies (54 TEU's). Due to very late running of the trial (2 hours late) I only managed to photograph the outward working as I had other commitments for the afternoon.

Other bits and bobs from this morning include:
    - 078 running L.E. from Heuston to Portarlington.
    - Tamper 744 1050 Kildare - Wexford.
    - Usual diet of 22000's and 201 + MKIV sets.

    Evening all,

After yesterday's fun and games (plus the bonus of sunshine!) it was back to the more mundane stuff today (with lots of heavy rain) with a visit to Portarlington station to see the recently completed track alterations to the yard on the Down side. The existing down siding was slewed closer to the station and extended. A new siding and locomotive release road was also created. This will allow PWD train locos to run around without going to the Down Main and Down Loop and blocking the mainline.

To see the alterations click http://smu.gs/20BYLn0

    VIDEO:
    A rare 9ICR passenger working to Cork this evening with 22055 + 22051 + 22054 working the 2100 Heuston - Cork service. This is normally formed by a 3ICR + 4ICR formation.

In Cork the sets will be split with 2X3ICR forming the 0550 Cork - Heuston & 3ICR forming the 0615 Cork - Heuston "Express". Thurs 18.02.16

Are the smaller inspection cars visual-only or do they have track-measuring equipment on board?

Visual only, just the EM50 and the Sperry wagon have track recording equipment onboard.

Are these inspection cars very accurate given the low speeds where as a train going up to 100mph would have greater impact on the line if inspecting. If you travel the train a lot you notice any sort of movement with the line or little things but I'm not sure such an they could be picked up at low speeds.

The UK have equipment which does line speed, shame IE didn't keep some Mark 3's to do the same.

In the UK ultrasonic and track geometry testing is generally carried out at 25-30MPH (45MPH for their newest UTT)(with the exception of the NMT which can do basic track geometry at high speed using a special 70,000 images per second camera!). Ultrasonic and track geometry testing is currently faster here than in the UK at 50MPH and 40MPH respectively.

Higher speed test trains are not used for ultrasonic testing but for things such as OHLE stagger and wear, rail cant, platform tolerances, general track condition etc.

The "inspection cars" are for visual inspection only (i.e allowing staff to stop at specific places such as tunnels, bridges etc for visual inspection only).

The EM50 and Sperry are designed for low speed inspection using specialist equipment which will actually pick up the smallest flaw or imperfections in the railheads or track geometry and will scan the track better at low speeds than high speeds.

The faster the inspection the higher chance of missing a small flaw which could eventually lead to a bigger problem.

Just as a side note, I would love to have a spin on one. Nice little railtour! I have been inside Jess once when it "visited" the location I was at.

    Today's batch:

I ventured over to Ballykillane between Portarlington and Portlaoise to see 088 working the Belview - Portlaoise "Steel Train", plus 224 on the 1200 Heuston - Cork and a couple of 22000 Class Units on the Portlaoise Commuter service.

How can I find out when the steel train runs?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,363 ✭✭✭✭Del.Monte

We have a great little railway to be sure as the pictures of what appear to be freight - to the non enthusiast - are just materials for Irish Rail. The steel train and the snazzy ballast trains being cases in point. The case for retaining railways outside the Greater Dublin area grows weaker by the day.

why isn't the railway in km/h yet?

All the DARTs, DMUs, ICRs and 201 locos have their speedometers in Kph. The drivers have to convert mph to kph or just learn the limits off.

Only the DARTs have KPH only speedos, everything else has a primary MPH speedo.

    Evening all,

Been a while since my last update for various reasons.

The February gallery comes to a close with some pictures from Killarney and Killeen Cutting in the Killarney - Farranfore section, where recent engineering works have taken place to regrade the cutting.
