Would they ever be allowed do it with passengers on board, in my 16 years traveling only once did a 201 come and rescue a Mark III set after the 201 in charge got up close and personal with a cow!

Yep it's happened, a 2700 set had to rescue a 2x3 ICR on the Limerick line before. The 2700 even managed to haul the failed ICR up to line speed. There were no locos anywhere near by free and the passengers were stranded on the train. A spare 2700 at Limerick was the only thing around that could get it done.

Yeah remembered this but wasn't sure if passengers were on board. 2800 no?

Was, a 2700. It was their final fame to claim. The story is listed on the 2700 memorial webpage, it gives the unit numbers. Almost certain there were passengers on the failed ICRs.

Birdhill to Ballybrophy train proclaims destination : Ennis.

Perhaps it aspires to continue from Ballybrophy via Portarlington and Athenry to Ennis.
Or perhaps the Limerick crews are now afflicted with that strange condition that Dublin drivers of 2900 railcars had, whereby they show any destination on the board, sometimes one destination in English and another in Irish.

I had hoped that this malady had been cured, but evidently not.

With the rear of the train showing Ballybrophy, I would say the motor which powers the blind is defective, hence showing Ennis.

I was in the West Clare area on Saturday and called in to the West Clare Railway at Moyasta. Despite their website saying the museum was open, when I arrived there wasn't a soul around and all locked up. Not very conductive to attracting visitors.

On the other side of the N67 road, the site of the long mooted transport museum holds a decaying bunch of locomotives and rolling stock including A class, 121, 141 and 181 Class plus Mk2a, MK3 and MK3 Push/Pull carriages.

    Draw your own conclusions.

I drew my own conclusions about this operation many years ago. I went out of my way to help them from the outset, but my last dealings with them was when the owner rang me up to tell me to **** off - his exact words.

It is what it is...basically a one man band that goes it's own way. Their website isn't too up to date usually. it hosts the one working ex CIE narrow gauge loco in the land and is worth going for that, best to phone first though. Chip in the cost of the coal and they'll steam her especially.

I do wonder what happens when 5C needs a boiler overhaul, surely they aren't making enough to fund that and add to that what happens when Mr Whelan is no more?

Will the transport museum ever come about? I gather the plans are dependent on grant funding, planning permission is granted, I'll believe it when ground is broken..

It most certainly isn't shut down

I found Jackie Whelan a great chap to have natter with.

May this year, definitely open.. 15z4kk7.jpg

Hopefully Belmond might get their hands on the Mark III coaches if they need them. What was the point in buying them off IE?

if the museum plan comes off, they are an integral part of that plan. I believe (but maybe wrong) the plan is for them to be hauled in and out of the museum (or back and forth in the yard maybe) by a winch as a travelling buffet. Don't rely on the accuracy of that though.

Just to add, Lady Edith and the three coaches from Americay are destined for the museum rather than service I gather.

That's horrible to see. At least downpatrick can hold the locos and stock it has and they aren't out in the open. Those mk2s look only fit for scrap on those pictures. Is that A class painted green or is it the affects of being out in the open ?
