That's gas, when I saw that pic I thought to myself - I was on that, but when I looked at the date it must have been on a previous one possibly 1990s. I certainly haven't been on the branch this century. :D

    RPSI: "The Western Explorer"
    Dublin - Athenry - Ennis - Limerick - Dublin

Continuing the theme of celebrating 40 years of the magnificent and iconic 071 class diesel locomotives, this Dublin-based one-day excursion featured diesel haulage on a trip along the Western Rail Corridor.

There were photostops at Monasterevan, Tullamore, Athlone, Attymon and Athenry, Ennis and Limerick.

As usual a big thanks to the IE and RPSI staff who make these tours possible. All proceeds from today's tour will go towards restoring the RPSI Diesel fleet to mainline running.

The next tour is scheduled for Saturday 8th April 2017 and the planned routing is:
Connolly - Portarlington - Athlone - Galway - Kilkdare - Kilkenny - Kildare - Connolly. A tour very much in the mold of the iconic ITG tours which has high mileage and will probably have three different locomotives during the day.

Photos from the tour yesterday are now online at http://smu.gs/2dLLxWt

They are really taking care of 071's, still spotless!

The recent ICR failure, is it unusual for both to fail and be different problems.

    Some West Clare stuff.

    7c%2Band%2B1c%2Bat%2BEnnis.jpg

The West Clare carried a good deal of excursion traffic during its lifetime and in this scene 7c is seen departing from Ennis with a heavy train comprising West Clare and ex.Tralee & Dingle stock.

    Mercury%2Baka%2BSlieve%2BCallan%2Bback%2Bat%2BWorks%2Bafter%2Bmovie.jpg
The West Clare was used for filming part of John Ford's 1957 movie "The Rising of the Moon" and 5c 'Slieve Callan' was used but renamed 'Viceroy' for the occasion - see details from Irish Railfans News below. After filming she was sent to Inchicore for scrapping where she is seen above. How 5c came to be preserved I'm not sure but after years plinthed at Ennis she is now to be found operating at the 'new' West Clare Railway at Moyasta Junction.

I chased the train from Belfast to Castlerock and got it at several locations en-route.
