freight traffic ran on the new-ross line up until 1995 i thought.
    Evening folks,

Photos from Wednesday and Thursday have now been uploaded to the March gallery at http://smu.gs/2mUImAj

On Thursday I took a ramble from Portlaoise to Limerick via Galway.

Some good loadings on the Western Rail Corridor. The 1840 Galway - Ennis (22003) had 43 passengers after Athenry. Many of these connected off the 1630 Heuston Galway. 31 of these alighted in Ennis, with 6 remaining in board for the 77 minute wait for the 2110 Ennis Limerick. The reason for the long wait is due to the long single line section between Limerick and Ennis of 24 miles and two trains from Limerick at 1945 (to Galway) and 2025 (to Ennis).
The 1800 Limerick Galway was crossed at Gort formed of a single 2800 Class unit. It was full and standing room only with all four vestibules having standing and sitting passengers in them.
Meanwhile for the 77 minute wait at Ennis I took a walk down the town to check out a certain railway themed pub.

77 minutes is an aweful long wait. that would certainly be turning me off using that service if i was in it's catchment.

Much later than that, Asahi coal+oil ran till November 1997, Foynes / Claremorris fertiliser ran till 2000.

My colleague had to do a detour via Waterford on return to Dublin this evening. Had a few minutes to spare so took a couple of shots with my iPhone, so quality is very poor.

It was a busy 20 minutes!

The 16.15 ex Heuston arrived at 18.12 before departing for Waterford West at 18.18 and stabling at 18.22. This was followed by another set off the 15.10 ex Heuston which had stabled at Waterford West (Limerick J line) return to the station 18.24 and departing with the 18.25 to Heuston at 18.28.

Another guy was around and hoping for a freight arrival at 18.24 but it didn't happen.

One or two other snaps are just of the station and the rock fall area.

Last week I traced the formation of the closed railway line from Roscrea to Birr and Portumna. Despite having closed 54 & 139 years respectively, large traces of the railway formation remain visible.

Any idea if the missing part of the Mallow bridge is the one at Waterford West?

Yes, it has been dumped there since 1996.

I see, they have lifted the last bit of the Mallow tracks from just after West Cabin towards the dumped bridge in the last few weeks and have them stacked up beside it.

Wonder if they are planning to get rid of it along with the old tracks.

I don't think that the bridge isn't CIE's to get rid of. So far as I know it's still the property of the Fishguard and Rosslare company. It was supposedly lifted to aid shipping though the river what ships go beyond here I've no idea.

Correct, I wonder how many people realise that the Waterford-Ballinacourty line and the Waterford-Rosslare Europort line is actually still to this day owned by the Fishguard & Rosslare Railways & Harbours Company and not CIE?

The F&RR&H itself however is jointly owned by IE and Stena.

The line beyond Wexford pier to Rosslare is FRRHC as well. The spur off the Waterford-Fermoy line to the Dolomite plant at Ballinacourty isn't theirs; it was laid by CIE. The plant closed in 1982 and the branch was abandoned some years ago though the mainline is the F+R's.

Yeah there is some shipping, Rice Bridge has regular lifts but think it's more local smaller boats rather than commercial but not sure.
