Does anyone know a good location around the Claddagh, Salthill or close by for nice wedding shots?

We havn't hired a photgrapher because myself and my mates have some pretty decent DSLR equipment, prime lenses etc.... The only thing is that obviously were not used to to taking wedding shots and aren't sure of the best location. Getting married in the Claddagh church and reception in Galway Bay Hotel.

    no offence intended

just because you and friends OWN digital camera equipment does not mean you will get decent images, everyone with a digital camera these days considers themselves a photographer.

taking wedding photos is an art and not one which everyone is capable of doing - it might sound like some professional photographer trying to defend his livelihood but I don't shoot weddings, have done some for friends and have refused to do some for family.

-Do any of your friends with cameras have experience in getting the attention of 20,30,40,50 people (or more),
-does anyone have experience in posing, setting up a picture?
-any experience with off camera flash ??
-have they experience in setting up a shot ?
-creating images which are fairly standard for weddings?
-have any of your friends experience with photoshop or similar software for editing/post processing the images afterwards?

from your post it looks like you just want a location - usually thats the photographers job to scout the wedding venue/reception venue and find a suitable location for pictures if you do not have a photographer then the couple themselves should know what pictures they want from the day and should research the locations themselves ..... and people just think wedding photographers just turn up on the day and make a packet of money.

Just outside the Claddagh Church has good views across the bay to the long walk, or the prom near the hotel looks out over the sea. They are nice locations but i'm not sure of their suitability for wedding shots. Also, you are right on the edge of the Atlantic so be prepared for strong breezes for photos along the coast... windswept guests with horizontal hair are not good looks! You might be better to check if your hotel has gardens.

But I agree 100% with PCPhoto, please reconsider hiring a professional wedding photographer. They should know suitable locations, but even more importantly they are specialists in weddings so you are guaranteed good photos. Anyone can take good photos at a wedding... if they are standing behind the professional who gets people in position and looking at the camera!

I've been at 2 weddings where the photographer was an amateur enthusiast. I didn't realise the difference a professional makes until then. They could take excellent photos normally, but the wedding photos were technically good (lighting etc) but they were bad photos and the brides were very disappointed. The amateurs didn't have the experience or ability to control groups of people or get them to relax and focus. Professionals put people at ease, know how to get the best from people (even kids), know how to position people for best effect, even down to poses.
