John McManus did his hamstring in the warmup the last day and will be out for aprox. 6 weeks. It's the same hamstring that has gone on him before, so that's not good news considering how much we need good defenders.

That's the end of Club Championship until Roscommon's involvement in the All-Ireland series is over and there are lads from all over the county hightailing it to the airport, bound for the US for the summer.

Clann with one foot in the semi it would seem given they have beaten the two best sides in the county already. Lennon bringing his county form to the club and by all accounts Harney was brilliant this weekend..now McStay needs to wrap him in cotton wool for the championship.

Sad to see the continued fall from grace of Castlerea though. That area has produced not only some of Roscommon's best ever footballers but some of the finest footballers to ever play the game (large number of the winning all-Ireland sides came from Castlerea/Tarmon). Mismanagement at under-age for the last 25 years has seen the club produce very few county standard players for over a decade+ now. They have never replaced Brother Mel who was terrific at noticing a talent early, often before the player noticed it himself.

Harney and Lennon both very good at weekend. Great to see Harney fit and playing we badly need his power around the middle.

Funny, they killed off hurling in the club and never realised it was keeping a lot of kids playing GAA and bringing in other families to the club
Sometimes clubs need an intervention from the county board to help turn things around

Best of luck to the Junior side later this evening. A strong side named so hopefully they get the result.
Also a chance for the likes of Padraig kelly to show as he probably is better than a few lads who were kept on the senior panel ahead of him.

Bit of an all-round disaster in Castlebar yesterday evening, Mayo winning with a last gasp goal, playing with a fly keeper and Ultan Harney got injured again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,363 ✭✭✭✭rossie1977

What exactly was McStay trying to achieve? A team with Domican, Ronan/Conor Daly, Lennon, Harney in defence conceding a huge score to a inexperienced Mayo junior side was bad enough but then losing one of your best senior players for the next month just makes it worse.

Apparently Featherstone made another big mistake in goal last night which probably means Lavin will at least start in the championship.

Where were the likes of Donie/Cathal Shine, O'Gara, Healy, Kilcline last night. Some of the best players in the county and they either don't want to play for McStay or he feels they can't contribute..

Under 17s were well beaten by Galway this evening in Tuam, it was 0-5 apiece after 30 mins but Galway ran out winners by 4-18 to 0-8 in the end. Wasn't at the game but apparently Galway were far superior physically.

A bit more positive news on the injury front. Found this on the Leitrim Observer website:

Roscommon GAA have issued another injury update ahead of next Saturday’s Connacht Senior Football Championship clash with Leitrim with a much more positive picture emerging.

Kevin McStay’s side travel to Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada for the Semi-Final clash with Leitrim on Saturday at 5.30 and have issued a more positive update on their injury situation ahead of the game.

Roscommon GAA revealed that players who did not play as many minutes in challenge matches were all made available to their clubs last weekend and are available for selection for the Connacht Championship semi-final.

Hamstring victory Ultan Harney is continuing to improve but Leitrim game comes too soon while Cathal Compton, suffering from an ankle ligaments injury, successfully came through a weekend in-house game. Both John McManus and Niall McInerney, suffering from hamstring injuries, proved their fitness during the week.

Cathal Cregg, suffering from a groin niggle, played with his club at the weekend while Niall Daly, coming off a foot injury, returned to full training last weekend. Fergal Lennon, who has been suffering from back spasms, played 35 minutes in midweek challenge game, unable to train over weekend due to exams.

Ciaran Lennon remains out of action for eight weeks with a complex break of his thumb while Sean McDermott faces a battle to be fit after coming off injured in a midweek challenge. McDermott did not play for his club at the weekend but hopes to be fit.

Main thing now is to ensure final is in The Hyde....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,393 ✭✭✭megadodge

Not much to say about that other than at least there were no injuries. Some good scores taken throughout, but that nagging feeling that Roscommon still don't cope well with being run at down the middle persists.

Fintan Cregg played mainly in defense. Not sure what that's about? Maybe looking at him as having a bit more physical presence there now that Ultan is out for a while.

Cathal Cregg looked very sharp too.

What is the issue with the hyde this year? I thought it would definitely be ready this year

It's 18000 I believe, main problem. Cathal Cregg came and scored some wonderful scores today. Leitrim very limited.

hmmm I wonder what the minimum capacity for a connacht final would be.

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 144 ✭✭blazermel

Can someone tell me why or when the capacity of the Hyde was revised down further? What happened since the 2015 connacht final that's brought it down to 18,000?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,393 ✭✭✭megadodge

The official capacity is around 23,000 at the moment, but I can absolutely guarantee that 30,000 could attend a match in the Hyde in complete safety. Those f*ckwits in Health & Safety out to prove the justification for their employment in the first place might say otherwise, but I've been at matches in the Hyde over the years where there were 30,000 and once where there were estimates of 33-35,000 and while that was definitely tighter there were no problems.

Any moron trying to say only 18,000 can attend a match in safety in the Hyde should be sacked on the spot! They don't actually know what they're talking about. And I'm deadly serious about that!

And the only thing worse than putting up with that is the idiots who actually believe them.

I heard (not 100% reliable) the reason for the doubts over the Hyde hosting the Connacht final is because when Croke Park allocated the County Board the money for doing up the pitch there was c. 50k left over. Croke Park told the CB to hold onto it and finish off various other things like turnstiles with the money. Instead the CB put the money into the new Centre of Excellence site in Runnabrackan - and now Croke Park are very angry.

No matter what the reason(s), Roscommo should move hell and high water to make sure it's played in Roscommon. Enough is enough. Wev'e played Galway three times in Connacht finals in the last two years - all away from home. Fair is fair.
