Building a cheap linux server

Heyo,

Considering building a cheap little linux box to try and stop paying monthly fees for website hosting (and minecraft hosting, more importantly), and get some extra computational power for running simulations (I do science, me)

Basic requirements would be:

Hosting 2-3 websites
Hosting a Minecraft server
Decentish power - Ideally Quadcore and 4-8GB of ram, but Dualcore'll do if it's prohibitive.

I've considered building a machine with years, and have done a lot of upgrading, but since I've never done it I'd appreciate some help putting the build together, even if it's just to cost it.

I dunno what your budget it but something like this should do you grand:

decoundo: Budgets around the 400 mark - it's more an idea that I'm pondering atm, the lower the cost goes, the more likely it gets I'll actually do it. Could definitely drop the GPU for that, in all likelihood this will never have a screen attached, which leaves it quite reasonable indeed. Hmmm...

just a word of warning, UPC don't like you hosting websites off their network, and its against their T&C. meaning to get a true static IP you will have to move to a business contract with them, meaning more dolla, if they have that type of thing at all. FWIW, I think magnet broadband offer static IPs as standard, but not sure about their policy myself, but they have a rep on boards somewhere you can speak to.

either way, sort out your infrastructure first before splashing on hardware.

my (100mb :pac: ) UPC package is fairly static, in that I've never seen the ip change, but that doesn't mean it won't.

I sent them an email a few weeks ago about that. Got an auto-response and nothing after that. Oh well, if they don't want money then...
I think magnet had an upgrade to static for €5 or something. UPC's business packages throw in all sorts of junk so an upgrade would be better.

You can use something like DynDNS or No-IP.
