I read this article this morning http://accountantguru.ie/revenue-commissioners is this just some scaremongering or is there something in this.

Has there been anything like this happening in your area and are there targeting any particular profession.

That's not scaremongering - that's how Revenue operate.

Different districts may target different business areas.

This is copied from the Revenue Commissioners annual report for 2010:

Included in these audit and compliance programmes, are the results of very specific focus on "cash" businesses, for example:
    Construction: 2,226 audits yielded €61.2m.
Motor Trade: 235 audits yielded €10.4m
Hospitality - Pubs, Entertainment Venues, Nightclubs 295 audits yielded €7.2m
Professionals - Doctors, Dentists, Vets, Solicitors: 328 audits yielded €9.4m
Restaurants and Fast Food: 248 audits yielded €10.6m

They seem to have a big focus on people who receive tax relief on Income protection and personal pension contributions at the moment. If you took out a personal pension in 1996 say, and contributed for only 6 month but forgot to have the revenue discontinue your relief when you stopped contributing, you could have a mighty bill on its way to you!

Revenue are only doing their job (no offence intended to them) ....

in the past number of years they were badly managed and plenty of businesses operated without being 100% compliant and now that they are running (almost) properly it is seen as some kind of crackdown.
