Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Teaching council - Accounting & Economics

    hi

Can someone please answer me this question?

The BBS of Business studies from DCU should qualify you to teach accounting, business and economics on both the PAC and teaching council website. however, there are restrictions that 30% of the degree needs to be economics/accounting based over the 3 year period in order to be able to teach accounting and economics.

however, even if you did every possible economics OR every possible accounting subject within this degree, it still only accounts for 19.5% of your credits - therefore, still falling short.

As this is the case, how can this (and other business degrees) possibly meet the criteria set?? it doesn't make any any sense to me.

Also, if anyone can give me a reason as to why the reason the teaching council refuse to acknowledge subjects taken at a masters level, i would be most enlightened....

I'm sure i'm not the first business teacher to come across this and to say it is frustrating is unreal - I will personally be calling into the TC tomorrow for explanations - but I would say that chance would be a fine thing....

I had a similar issue recently with the TC.

From the 'list' on the TC website my course qualified me for all three business subjects, as did the PAC website (but this is really the same 'list' as on the TC website).

Anyhow a quick call to the TC had me put in my place - infact I can't get over how rude I was dealt with......

The TC say 30% of course must be in the subject to gain eligibility to teach the subject. As with you OP no matter what options I could have chosen there was no way that I could possibly have taught all three business subjects yet the 'list' says my course would.....

What annoys me is that I completed my degree over 10 years ago -which was before the TC came about - and at that stage we were told the course would allow you to teach the 3 subjects, and the information availalbe from the TC and PAC website still reflects this showing how outdated that list must be.

A quick call to my old college careers department identified that the course has not changed at all - maybe topics- but not modules and they still understood that the course would allow people to teach three subjects (obviously there are not many people doing this course then going on to teach).

The TC maintain that the 'list' is a hangover from before they came into place and has absolutely no bearing as to whether or not you will have enough credits to teach the subject. I was informed that the list would be removed by next year and all potential teachers will have to confirm with the TC if there course is eligible or not in advance of completing the PGDE.

Good luck with meeting them tomorrow, but I don't think they will lend you an understanding ear to voice your questions.

    Keep me posted!

Hi Double Entry (love the name!!)

it sounds like exactly the same issue - i did my course in dcu - finished 9 years ago - the structure is exactly the same except for the fact it's now 180 credits instead of 210 - but subjects are the same etc etc.

the TC are by far the rudest most obnoxious organisation I have EVER come across. I have escalated another complaint (they lost my original application and registration info and hence I am down over 3k) to the minister and to my local TD who is pursuing the matter - they are accountabe to NO ONE. my local TD (i really do sound like i've nothing better to do, but they really really got my goat up....) cannot believe the situation and the culture in there and it does need to be seen to be believed.

what resolution did you come to in the end? i'm not backing down on this - i've been offered a permanent job, yes permanent (in 2011!) provided I can show that I'm registered with all 3 subjects - however, as you point out, this isn't even possible with my degree even though it's on the list.

I'm going down there at 9am tomorrow and i'm going to sit it out until I get an explanation....because as far as I can see (and i've researched this all day) there is absolutely no way that degree can qualify you for all 3 subjects.

Sorry for the late reply OP and I hope you get this before going to the TC tomorrow. This is certainly the same situation.

Congrats on getting the perm job offer!:D

Personally I agree with you that they seem to accountable to no one and it can be VERY frustrating  keep your cool and don't lose the head as you will be giving them a carte blance to tell you they are not discussing this case any further.

Also when I did suggest having my solicitor look over the TC list and PAC application form etc. I has immediatley shut down and told how once you apply through PAC you accept that it is up to you to have your course independatly verified to confirm what subjects you will be eligible to teach. (This to me would suggest that by having the 'list' on their website is a case of misleading advertisment' but legally they ,maintain that you lose all rights once you apply through the PAC system....)

If you can PM me this morning before you head down and I will explain who I spoke with and more details.

If I miss you, good luck and please let me know how you get on as I have not yet accepted defeat from them!

    Hi,

I was just wondering if either of you rectified any of this with the Teaching Council? I have a BBS from DCU with the finance specialism and I registered with the TC last year. I was shocked to discover the degree only entitles you us to teach Business/Business Studies.

Have either of you looked into completing additional modules in order to get registered in Accounting/Economics? I have a colleague who is in a similar situation with Geography. He is short a couple of modules but is considering completing these in order to qualify with the TC.

Any informartion you have would be greatly appreciated

I did get this rectified in the end without having to do more modules. However, I had to submit loads more documentation and I had done a masters aswell - of course there was an extra charge for this. What's new with the TC?? I got letters and emails from DCU lecturers backing up modules and my masters. I also had several years work experience in finance which they took into account. However this was only have an oral hearing which I had with the TC after I sent in a solicitors letter which outlined how discrimatory and misleading all their information and requirements were. So all in all it was one hell of a 6 month battle.....

Let me know how you get on

Sorry for intruding but I find this topic very interesting.

I am currently in second year of a B.B.S(Lang.) and teaching is something that I would be very interested in. This thread has been an eye-opener. I've heard the TC are ridiculous to try and deal with..

It's a bit of a double whammy for me as I presumed when I was back in school, that I'd be eligible to teach the language as well as three business subjects. However, apparently the lack of literature in my course, despite studying the language for 4 years and spending year abroad in the country and work-placement, I am not eligible.

Can anyone offer me any advice with regard to what subject choices I should make to increase my options or who I could contact?

    Thanks in advance

Hi Highly, I am also doing this course in DCU and also hoping to become a second level teacher. Quite surprised when i read this and trying to find information from the Teaching Council has given me nothing more than a sore head! In a nutshell, will I not meet the criteria to teach Business, accounting and economics after graduating?
